2023 Southern Miss Football Fall Camp Report: Day 6

I was standing on the sideline during 11 on-11 drills towards the beginning of practice, and Bill Wiles completed a pass to Chandler Pittman; he got leveled by Jay Stanley right in front of me, and I said to myself, "football is back."

Matt Wallner set to become 23rd former USM letterwinner / 24th former player to play in MLB

Wallner is listed as the starting right fielder in the first game of a double header for the Twins versus Cleveland today.

That will make him the 23rd former USM letter winner and 24th former USM player overall to appear in an MLB game.

Letter-winners (MLB seasons):
  1. Laurin (aka Hugh) Pepper (1954-1957)
  2. Fred Waters (1955-1956)
  3. Bubba Phillips (1955-1964)
  4. Jim Davenport (1958-1970)
  5. Mickey Harrington (1963)
  6. Frank Baker (1970-1974)
  7. Pat Rapp (1992-2001)
  8. Kevin Young (1992-2003)
  9. Bill Selby (1996-2003)
  10. Chad Bradford (1998-2009)
  11. Tommy Davis (1999)
  12. John Bale (1999, 2000-2001, 2003, 2007-2009)
  13. Matt Skrmetta (transferred to Jacksonville after lettering at USM) (2000)
  14. Bob McCrory (2008-2009)
  15. Brent Leach (transferred to Delta State after lettering at USM) (2009)
  16. Jarrett Hoffpauir (2009-2010)
  17. Brian Dozier (2012-2020)
  18. Scott Copeland (2015 & 2018)
  19. Cody Carroll (2018 & 2020)
  20. Nick Sandlin (2021-present)
  21. Kirk McCarty (2022-present)
  22. Chuckie Robinson (2022-present)
  23. Matt Wallner (2022-present)
Other Players:
  1. Carl Schutz (played in 1992 at USM but did not letter, transferred to SE Louisiana) (1996)
Let me know if I missed anyone. Its not always easy to find what happened to folks that transferred particularly if they did not letter at USM. USM does not do a good job of keeping track of even former letter-winners whereabouts.

Fall Predictions for Football

As of right now, some things are becoming relatively clear to me. As I have previously stated, we will have a solid secondary, which was a position that many had doubts about. Hall has done a great job of shoring up that area. If there is any likely weakness, it would be playing the heir apparent two at CB. There is enough talent to replace those two. The LBs should be good, and the DL excellent.

The game's name is the QB, and for all intents and purposes, Wiles should have the job if the season starts tomorrow. The reason is accuracy. Initially, I thought it would be Edwards, and it may end up being him.

I am sure this will be an excellent year for Mims. The kid is incredible. I originally picked a 9-3 season for us but later said 8-4 and may have stated at one time 7-5, so the final prediction will be coming soon.

It may very well turn out that Hall is the best hire ever.

Fall Camp Report: Day 1....

Well, not too much to be learned from today's practice. So I will try and put a few things together for you....

1. Edwards probably had the best day of the 3 front-runners. Wiles started the day off and Edwards was next. Nothing to read into here. Edwards will start the day off tomorrow.

2. Hall did state Habas was out with some medical condition but didn't give out more info than that.

3. Everyone looked in great shape. Seemed as if Gore Jr may have gotten a step faster.

4. No injuries

5. It was the first day, everyone is excited. Tomorrow will be a day like today and we will focus on the defense more. Friday and Saturday will have more info as they get after it with shoulder pads on.

6. Brandon Hayes had a spectacular one-hamded catch. Nice to see him back after injury.

All-in-all a solid first day, yet nothing special.

Stay tuned as Dima Mixon (who is working Fall Camp for BGN will have more from in the upcoming days and weeks)
