It was a terrible start for Southern Miss. It is a close game now but Southern Miss is still shooting a terrible percentage at the 3-point line.

Whoever is coaching special teams, I don't recall a kickoff return past the 25-yard line, and if there was one, we most likely got a penalty on it. The same scenario applies to punt returns. In contrast, opponents can move the ball in these situations.

Field goals are their own adventure, and extra-point tries are scary. Punts are usually okay, and I can't recall but one being blocked.

A well-rounded team has special teams in order and can make a game a win or a loss. We are not even close.

I figure no one is formally accepting before the last week of the season. Unless they are currently unemployed which is probably not a good sign.

Positive:

The effort was better. The team played harder than they have all season.

Gibbs made long FG but was flat on a PAT that really set USM back.

Negatives:

This is a team that has no idea what winning football or how to play winning football. Too many stupid, self inflicted, penalties. Some coaching decisions are dumb. You never try for a punt block with less than 5 yards to go when you have a team.backed up. Call a TO when your QB is injured to set things up inside the 5 so you don't have Tate rushed and he fumbles a hand-off.

The Elosss Johnson team would beat this group by 3 TD. Worst USM team perhaps ever. What is sad, it is by far not one of the least talented teams USM has had. It is the worst coached, worst prepared, and worst disciplined team ever. These things are on coaches.

JMU 55, SM 10. Many turnovers, many stupid penalties. More bad coaching, poor tackling, no running game, no passing game. You can just feel it coming.
