Due to scheduling issues, Southern Miss found its way into playing 5 games in 1 week. 4 of these were in Lake Charles as Southern Miss participated in the Lake Area Classic. The Eagles are off to a better start in 2020 (9-3) than they were in 2019 (7-5) that saw them win 40 games, capture the CUSA Tournament Championship, and finish 2-2 in the LSU regional that saw them win 2 games over the Sun Devils of the Pac 12. Coach Jay Ladner and the Southern Miss basketball team are sure of one thing. If the Golden Eagles are going to make it to the CUSA Basketball Tournament at the Star in Frisco, Texas, they will have to win games on the road in CUSA bonus play.

This team, though there have been and are many concerns about their youth, etc., is doing really well, really well. McNeese is a tourney team from last year. We won in eight, 10-0. We are 9/2 opening the season, and almost beat OP at home.

I'm excited.

Southern Miss has clinched a spot in the CUSA tournament but is still playing for conference tournament seeding and a winning record overall.

The Eagles have scored 28 runs in the 3 games they have played, with 1 more to go at 1pm tomorrow. This is a great sign. If the bats stay hot and the pitching continues to be consistent (yes they did give up 11 runs in the 2nd game, but there are those games where you have to outscore your opponent and pitching is just not good that game), this young team will win a lot of games. Remember,a lot of the guys they are asking to pitch are Freshman or Sophomores. They will only get better as the season progresses. At this time last year they were 6-5 with losses to Miss State, Gonzaga (they swept the Eagles in a rain shortened seasies), and New Orleans. Eagles are 9-2 this season with losses to Ole Miss (half the team was sick) and a very good Central Arkansas (that team will probably win the Southland Conference and their Friday starter is as good as any the Eagles will see this season). I think Coach Berry has to be upbeat about this young team.
