Conference USA announced Thursday, March 12, a suspension of all spring sports competition, effective immediately, until further notice. The decision was made in an effort to limit the spread of this virus and in the interest of the health and safety of our student-athletes, campus personnel, working and event personnel, the Hattiesburg community and all those who attend Southern Miss athletic events.

Information regarding ticketing will be communicated as soon as it becomes available.

End of the season Q&A with Southern Miss MBB coach Jay Ladner

The Southern Miss men's basketball team finished up the regular season at MTSU on Saturday. The Golden Eagles showed grit and determination on the road but fell to the Blue Raiders in overtime 65-62. The Golden Eagles finished the season 9-22 going 5-13 in CUSA play. The Eagles finished 13th (one better than picked in the preseason poll) and di not make the CUSA Tournament. Looking back on the season, one thing really stood out. The Golden Eagles did not quit even when the chips were stacked against them. That is a credit to the coaching staff and the leadership on the team.

Supporting Information for Pitcher of the Week Nominee: Ben Ethridge threw seven strong innings in only his second career start for the Golden Eagles to improve to 3-0 this season. He surrendered his lone run in the second on a wild pitch. Ethridge retired nine batters in a row at one point and did not allow a hit from the second through the fifth inning. He fanned five batters and has registered at least that many strikeouts in all four appearances this season. His 26 strikeouts for the year ranks first on the squad. Both of his starts were quality starts – six or more innings while allowing three earned runs or less.

Team Notes

* The Golden Eagles won their third, three-game weekend series to start 2020 over Little Rock. They also captured three of four games at the Lake Area Classic in Lake Charles.

* In the two wins over the Trojans in the weekend series, the big inning came in the sixth for the Golden Eagles as they scored five times on Friday and three times on Saturday. The only run in the Sunday tilt came in the sixth as well.

* Senior Matt Guidry extended his reached base streak to 71 games after drawing a fourth-inning walk against Little Rock Sunday. Guidry may have been 1x6 for the weekend, but reached base via walk seven times (twice intentionally) and was hit by a pitch once. He now has a team-high on-base percentage of .577 and now has drawn 123 career walks, which ranks sixth on the Golden Eagle career charts.

* Charlie Fischer had the team’s season-best nine-game hitting streak snapped Sunday versus Little Rock.

* Freshman Dustin Dickerson leads the team in multi-hit games with five, all being two-hit contests.

* Walker Powell threw seven innings in a win in the Friday night game over Little Rock and he now has lasted at least seven innings in all four starts this season. Powell is 3-0 on the year with a team-low 1.24 ERA.

* In 10 2/3 innings, closer Hunter Stanley has fanned 19 and walked just one. He got a save in two appearances against the Trojans.

* The Golden Eagles begin their 25th season of Conference USA play next weekend. Southern Miss has five C-USA regular-season titles and five tournament crowns, including four each under Scott Berry. In fact, the Golden Eagles have won at least one championship since the 2016, for a total of five (two regular season and three tournament championships).

Battle for the Bottom Decided???

The Eagles put up a good fight against MTSU but once again we lost in a close one. From the final standings, it looks like we are 2nd from the bottom and MTSU is last; however, is that a just final standing? MT has beaten us all 3 times we played this year and is in last place. I just don't know for sure about that.

For sure we are sucking wind in all aspects of the game but I think we are on the verge of something good. It has been a long journey back from the catastrophe a few years back but I think we are on a good comeback. There are a couple of good things I saw toward the end of the season. Passing the ball inside and hustle. I think the later will be a factor next season if it is maintained next year. If all members of the team spend the Summer in the coliseum practicing shooting the ball and work on defensive maneuvers. we will be better. Add a couple of people at key positions and look out. Instead of fighting to stay out of the bottom we will be battling for the top. Assuming CUSA doesn't change the rule like it did in football. I will say, in a big surprise next year, we finish at least 3rd in the conference.Stay well Eagle fans and wash your hands frequently as I did this past season.
