Heres the Baseball scenario....

La Tech leads WKU 7-2 that is probably a win.

USM now has a 3 game lead over UTSA and a 2 1/2 game lead over LA Tech.

Win 1 game at MTSU and the Eagles win CUSA

The Eagles are still in hosting race, but need to win the series at MTSU and make a deep run in the conference tourney.

#21 in RPI and MTSU is #49, the Eagles must have 2 of 3 to give themselves a chance.

Having Ewing in the lineup is HUGE. This is a different team with him in the lineup. Sargent bounced back in a big way today. Harper was just nasty and that was great for him after Friday.

Looking ahead to C-USA Tournament

This past weekend, great hitting and average pitching defeated great pitching and average hitting. However, when it comes to tournament time, I will take a great pitching and average hitting over great hitting and average pitching. ODU won't last more than 3 games in the tournament and if they somehow drop their opening round game, they will not make it back through. Pitching depth wins conference tournaments. No other team in C-USA can push 6 starters on the mound, USM can. Bats will get better, getting Ewing back will help. Paetow bats .340 plus in the leadoff position. Here is what the lineup could look like.
1. Paetow
2. Dickerson
3. Ewing
4. Sargent
5. McGillis
6. Wilks
7. Lynch
8. Johnson
9. Gabe

Putting Gabe at 9th only gives the order back-to-back leftys at 6 and 7. That will make situational pitching to this staff more difficult. Having Gabe hit 9th puts someone on base for Paetow and Dickerson to drive in.

Big baseball game today...

Since we haven't done this all season, Ole Miss will visit The Pete this evening. What are your thoughts in keys to the game and predictions?

I don't give predictions, but I will say, If Adams continues to improve and pitches like he did last week, then the Eagles will have a very good chance at winning. Also, they must take advantage of runners in scoring position.

If Southern Miss were to hire a new basketball coach what direction should they go?

We all know Southern Miss is limited by funds available so outbidding big-money schools is not an option. That leaves tactics such as hiring a coach with a damaged reputation like Coach Eustachy, coaches with connections to Southern Miss that are willing to work for less pay, I believe Coach Ladner fits into that group but if things do not work out it makes the firing all the more painful, or taking a chance on a coach from a lower division in NCAA basketball, junior college, or high school. Here is a coach who has been a super successful coach at the junior college level that I bet most Southern Miss fans have never heard of. This coach is one of many at the Division, II, Division III, NAIA, junior college, or high school that could be considered. This coach does have a Southern Miss connection as he coached one of the former Southern Miss greats at the JC level.

New NIL Rules from NCAA

the guidance defines as a booster any third-party entity that promotes an athletics program, assists with recruiting or assists with providing benefits to recruits, enrolled student-athletes or their family members. The definition could include "collectives" set up to funnel name, image and likeness deals to prospective student-athletes or enrolled student-athletes who might be considering transferring. NCAA recruiting rules preclude boosters from recruiting and/or providing benefits to prospective student-athletes.

So, if anyone who is not a booster, wants to recruit a player that is fine, lol. So schools will stop getting money from some and that money will go towards recruiting players. The NCAA just digs bigger holes. Best way to fix this is make a cap on how much an athlete can earn a year from NIL
