Long ago game with State.

I was traveling and did not see the game, but I listened. It must have been around 1986 or 1987 in Jackson. If I remember right, the game was close, and it was one of those games where one would score and then the other. It was late in the game, we were behind, and we had a 4th down the ball was somewhere around our own 20. A pass to our tight end gave us a first and we went on to score and win the game. Anyone remember who the QB and TE were?

USM Basketball... Then-Now

Some of you old-timers remember the play of my Fraternity Brother Wendell Ladner and other past great players. Jackie Laird (playing in the old gym), Spoon, Fisher, Keys, and so many others. Who can forget the great match-ups in the Old Metro Conference, especially Memphis State?

For a time, we yearned for a conference championship or a simple winning season that eluded us. Unfortunately, we have been among the worst teams in all of College basketball in the last few years. We battled MTSU for two years for the bottom spot in the conference. Ironically, they rose to the top last year, and we remained at the bottom.

We have an opportunity to do the same. We are now at the top of the conference and have an RPI of 55. Our coach was destined to be fired last year and is in a great position now to become coach of the year. No one knows how the season will end, but it has been a hell of a ride so far.

Thoughts on win over Arkansas State...

At 18-4, 7-2 the Golden Eagles have really set themselves up well for postseason play. 4 more wins should get an NIT birth, but this squad can do much more.

Alvarez is a difference maker at PG. Ladner will have to decide to start him or keep him coming off the bench. His energy is infectious.

Haase was much more assertive. At times he looks as if he wants to be a guard but doesn't realize he is in a big man's body and his skill set down low is difficult to stop.

Pinckney has been the most improved player I have seen this season. He is playing with such confidence and at 6'9 is a difficult ask for SBC teams to defend. Bigger than guards and faster than most forwards but can shoot from the outside is a ticket to get paid professionally.

Harris is just Harris. He scores but everytime he touches the ball a lump goes up in my throat. He is not a good ball handler, but get him in the paint and he will score. He defense is superb and he can defend the paint and perimeter.

With Alvarez back this team has depth. Ivory and Alvarez give teams firs in the press and is fun to watch.

Basketball is actually fun again, and it's about dang time.
