Hall gets little respect from Athlon

Picked Number 8 in the conference.

8. Will Hall, Southern Miss
Despite a revolving door at quarterback due to injuries in his first two years at the helm, it's clear Hall has Southern Miss on the right track going into '23. After a 3-9 debut in '21, the Golden Eagles jumped to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in Sun Belt play last season to earn the team's first bowl trip since '19. Prior to this stop, Hall had successful stints as an assistant at Tulane (2019-20), Memphis ('18) and Louisiana ('17) to go with head-coaching opportunities at West Alabama (25-11) and West Georgia (31-9). He's a rising star to watch entering the '23 season.

Southern Miss excited and focused to face in-state foe Alcorn State

Southern Miss opens the season against Alcorn State in just a mere three days, and you could tell from practice today that the team is more ready to hit someone else than ever. Yesterday, we got a lot of feel on where the offense is going to be come Saturday, but today I took an in-depth look at the defense especially as we inch one hour closer to kickoff.

Southern Miss sets sights on Alcorn State in home opener

Southern Miss is playing football on Saturday. I repeat, Southern Miss is playing football on Saturday. It’s officially game week, and I don’t think anybody is more excited than head coach Will Hall and his players. It’s Hall’s third year, and I have covered Southern Miss all three seasons. And his excitement for game week in his face and composer in the post-game interview was at an all-time high. Even with the starting depth chart out (more later), the players still participated in their average competition on Tuesday.

Practice was closed today....

This was the day that they go through a mock game and Hall usually closes practice today. We really can't complain either. I was talking to some of my fellow SBC indiders at Rivals and it seems USM is the only team that allows media to attend for the dull length of every practice. Most only allow them to be there the first 20 minutes of practice to take pics amd then must return after practice for access to coaches and players. That is the balancing act. Sometimes we aren't allowed to write about certain situations so we don't lose the incredible access we have. It's a balancing act.

Apologies everyone....

I was going to try and get a camp article out today but due to unforseen circumstances I was not able to. I actually injured myself doing physical therapy. I am pushing to get myself able to try and walk in The Rock this season. Sometimes I push myself too much. Never fear, we will be back tomorrow. Hope everyone is well!!!

The OL ?? Transforming our Offensive Line from Good to Great

We all know the woes of the OL in what seems like an eternity; I have an image embedded in my memory of linemen standing and looking around as our RBs were hit in the backfield. Has anything changed?

Toward the end of the season, the group seemed to improve significantly in the rush aspect. Have the Spring and Fall sessions led to a more dynamic and homogeneous line? From what I have pieced together, I believe the answer is yes. First of all, the coaching has improved. Secondly, the room has experience, and coaching has improved the techniques. Lastly, They are bigger and stronger with improvement in agility.

Again, this is what I inferred from Coach Hall over the last few months. The final question is, will the apparent improvements be effective against teams like Troy and South Alabama? We will know very soon. Improved, yes, great??

Southern Miss Football Practice Report: 8/22/23

Southern Miss was back in action after Saturday’s scrimmage on Tuesday with a no-pads practice. The practice was not very long, just under two hours with only nine periods.
