National Anthem etiquette

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong but is hand over your heart not in style Anymore? Been to most of bball games this year and 90% of our team does not put their hand over their heart during the anthem. Tonight 2 guys , Eddie Davis and the walk on from hburg were the only ones with hand over their heart . It has driven me crazy all year long, some guys just have their hands in the pockets , honestly it's truly pathetic . They look like they are part of some protest, the lack of respect is very concerning .

Being lazy and wondering is anyone on here has the whole story

I know there are myriad posts on here touching on the situation, but was wondering if anyone on here has the whole story about what went down with Duggan. I'm not completely shocked that he's not going to be here next year, but I am surprised that he stuck around so long only to be "not retained" as of yesterday.

Anyone on here have, and care to share, the inside story?

Thanks in advance.

Lanny, Can The Name Of BGN Be Changed?

After reading the last few weeks it should be changed to Bipolar Gold Nation.

I've always been told never get too high when you think things are great and never get down too low when you think things are crappy. This board definitely doesn't go by this.

Whether you think Hop and other staff were great hires or piss poor hires, they are OUR staff now. It is what it is. Now the best thing all of us can do is get behind the staff and support them.

It's Valentine's Weekend. Show some love to one another! Lol

The Hard part of the business.

This is the hard part of the business. You develop relationships with people and they leave or not retained. Its not fun but the really unfair thing would not be to let Hopson hire the coaches he wants on his staff. Yes Im disappointed really didn't see some of the hires fires going the way they did but that is the bad part of the business. Yes we don't pay a lot compared to the SEC but like a friend told me to make that kind of money in South Mississippi coaching football is pretty sweet but along with that comes this. But who do you support USM or people.

Met some long time Eagle fans in Columbia yesterday and they had only passing interest in who's in

whos out as assistant coaches. Actually refreshing and a reminder that the great majority of our fans are not on this board and inclined to argue every point. Then had dinner last night with long time supporter who has not been to a game since Hammond was removed. "They don't act like they want me any more. I called McGillis a couple of times but he never returned my call so to heck with them.". Didn't even try to change his mind. Not so refreshing.

Priorities when making a hire

From what I am seeing with all the various discussions on who Hopson is hiring and who he's hiring and not hiring, there are a lot of folks here who have never had to hire folks.

I was in that same boat a few years ago, but over the past few years I have had to hire and fire a number of individuals. During that time I learned a few things, and one is if you make good hires you have to do less firings.

There are a number of attributes I looked at when making hires but one stood above the rest.

The most important attribute is "Trust". If I can't trust you, you can't work for me, that is the bottom line. Experience, continuity, ect all take a back seat to trust.

If Hopson is hirng guys he trusts, I can't fault him for that.

Recruiting

A lot of us put ourselves through a lot of useless hand wringing which is best avoided. Case in point. Soon after Hopson's initial introductory speech there were some on here concerned that he would recruit practically all of our future prospects from MS. A quick perusal of the offer page reveals a heavy preponderance of players from La, Georgia, AL and Fl. Obviously it's still early but don't think your worries were justified. Still expect a lot of offers in MS.

Questioning expectations for next season

many on here are thinking we are loaded up for a big time run next season. I'm personally boy so sure. Even before Monk abandoned ship there were some huge question marks with this team after some key players have graduated. Starting with offense we will likely be starting two new tackles that have never taken a D1 snap. That is a recipe for disaster right there. Regardless of how good those guys are it will take at least half the season before they start to acclimate to the guys they play next to and the speed of the game at this level. Then you take out our leading WR and the QB's safety blanket in Casey Martin. Richard was a also big time for us.

Defensively we lose the heart of our D in Mike Smith, Bolton, and our MLB. All three of these guys had huge senior seasons. Then throw in the loss of your best corner. I'm not convinced that this years team will be as good as what we were last season. I see no way the Oline could be as good with the issues at tackle. Hope I'm wrong but I don't see enough talent to be making any historic statements. I do see 7-8 wins and a bowl game.
