Hoops Scholarship Answers

Ok guys

I talk with Doc briefly last night, not enough for a story or anything but here's what he tells me.

With Carey and Holland returning they will have 11 returning scholarship players. At this point he does not intend to bring an an additional scholarship player so this year the Eagles will be -1 scholarship.

The plan is to have -1 this year, -2 next year and -1 the third year.

Now that isn't set in stone, according to Doc if he found a "dog" that he thinks can really go and help get things turned around faster that he would adjust and go 0 this year, -2 next and -2 the third.

He feels good about fielding a full 15 man roster despite the scholarship reductions.

Fantastic atmosphere at the softball complex tonight

against Alabama. Over 1100 in attendance. We lost 7-1 but what a fun time. Cars had to park everywhere. Several had to be towed out of the mud. The left field deck was packed with Diamond Club members. Cough up a hundred bucks and come enjoy the fun and one and see a future world series participant.

Big Show on Sports Drive today

We're talking a lot of Southern Miss today on SportsDrive.

At 5:15 we have former Eagle LB Dylan Reda who is playing and coaching football in Europe. He'll tell us about that and his horrifying experience of being in Brussles when the latest round of terror attacks took place.

At 5:30 we have Eric Bossi from the Rivals.com National Basketball writer on to talk about the Southern Miss NCAA findings from a National Presepective and get his opinion on where the Eagles go from here.

We'll about the So Miss vs. OM game tonight and more...

Baseball transfer

I have reason to believe Luke Reynolds will be transferring to us this summer from Mississippi State. 2 years of eligibility remaining. He got a raw deal from Cohen this year so he sat out/left the team. Cohen wanted to redshirt him.

He can play inf/of. Very athletic. Hit .305 last season. .370 in league play (10 starts/16 games played).

He will definitely be in the mix next year.

Top JUCO WR talks So Miss

Gulf Coast (Perkinston, MS) CC wide receiver Brandon Martin took in Southern Miss' scrimmage this past weekend. The former LSU signee is expected to be among the nation's top JUCO prospects in '17.

As a high school senior, Brandon Martin was one of the most highly recruited prospects in the Midwest. The talented 6-foot-4, 205-pounder spent most of his senior season committed to Missouri before flipping to LSU late in the process.

Poking the bear

I was never against hiring Hopson. Always been a fan of J-Hop.
I was against firing Duggan. It was because of continuity, which is so far out of vogue these days that I am now a pariah. I'm good with that. The reason I was so angry is simply we're broke, and we were about to see things really grow.
Hindsight is 20/20, but I feel much better about the future now. We will still take a step back this year. But Hop seems to really want to succeed here. He seems intent on building a legacy. We could use that. For continuity, you know. Lol.
Football can put us back on the path to relevancy in D1. Success in football makes the path much easier for the other sports. Why? Money.
It definitely feels different now. I loved Fedora and Monken, but this feels different. Better. We need to reel off about 3 straight conference championships to get things started. Even with a step back, we'll be in the thick of it this year.
Some of you guys have hinted that Eagle Club membership is up. These things can build on themselves. I hope ticket sales follow. It just feels like we are about to break out.
To The Top

I still say we'd have been 11-1 had Monken stayed. But in the long view, we may be better off.

New NCAA Rule on Football Camps

The NCAA has again bowed to the SEC and ACC out of fear over Harbaugh and Meyer coming south and grabbing athletes. A Committee voted 6 to 4 (each football conference gets a vote) to prohibit football camps from being conducted away from campus AND prohibited coaches from other schools from attending other school's camp. That means that Hop can hold camps in Hattiesburg, but can't send coaches to the Alabama State camp like in the past. This was advocated by the SEC to keep Harbaugh and Meyer from holding camps in the south or from attending camps of other southern schools where they might see a kid who couldn't afford to pay to go to a Michigan or OSU camp. The vote was SEC, ACC, Pac12, Big12, SunBelt and MWC for with the Big 10, AAC, MAC and CUSA voting NO.

This only hurts players who want to be seen by programs outside their geographic area. For example, suppose a kid from Raleigh, Ms comes to a USM camp. He is good but USM doesn't have a need at that position of he is just a little below the talent USM is looking for. In the past, a MAC coach or SunBelt coach could be there and he might catch their eye. Or substitute OM for USM. A kid is good but not the so called SEC Pad lelvel. He could be seen by a SunBelt or MAC or AAC coach and get recruited by them. Now, unless that kid has the resources to travel to other camps (I.e. Money) he doesn't get seen.

Thank you NCAA. Where is the best interest of the student athlete in this.
