Throw it in the dirt guy on Eagle Hour

Weather for Saturday

Not looking good at all once you hit about 3pm. Jumps to 70% chance of thunderstorms once you get to 4 pm. Surely they university and NCAA will look at moving the game up to 11am. Appears that an 11am start time would be plenty to get the game in without delays. Heath have you heard anything about potentially moving up the start time from the University?

Tennessee has 5 pitchers throwing it close to 100

We will need to be disciplined in not chasing high fast balls. Whether they have a good ERA don’t know.

Hattiesburg Super Regional Preview: Tennessee vs. Southern Miss

POSTSEASON Mark Etheridge - June 8, 2023

No. 21 Tennessee (41-19) at No. 13 Southern Miss (45-18)

2 p.m. CT Saturday on ESPNU
TBD on Sunday
TBD on Monday, if necessary

Five Reasons To Watch

1. The Pete Gonna Be Rowdy – For last season’s home Super Regional versus Ole Miss, Southern Miss sent the fire marshal down to Biloxi and squeezed in a few extra dozen of black-and-gold-clad fans. Those fans tried really hard, but Ole Miss still won the series. This season, they get another shot. This time the SEC team is Tennessee. Hosting the second Super Regional in as many seasons, the USM fans are practically experts at this whole Packing the Pete process now. The Right Field Roost will be overflowing. Meats will be grilled. Coolers will packed full of ‘social dranks,’ and the atmosphere will be as good as any. And while Tennessee has seen its share of raucous crowds, there’s a uniqueness with a packed Pete Taylor Park that can be a burden to deal with as an opponent. However, as a fan of the sport, it’s a can’t-miss experience.

2. Tennessee’s new-found road success – During the SEC season, Tennessee struggled on the road. It was swept at Missouri and at Arkansas. It lost series at both LSU and Georgia. Then, in the final week of the season, after the team had found its stride with home sweeps over Mississippi State and Vanderbilt to salvage its season, the Vols went to Columbia and won a series from South Carolina. That seemed to eradicate some of the road woes, as Tennessee went on the road to the hottest team in the country and snapped Clemson’s 17-game winning streak en route to winning the Clemson Regional. That should provide tons of confidence going into Hattiesburg. Any team that can beat Clemson in Clemson can beat anyone in the country.

3. Tennessee Velo and Tanner Hall pitchability– Tennessee will bring more velocity than the Fast and the Furious series. Starters Andrew Lindsey (3-2, 2.40) and Chase Dollander (6-6, 4.50) will pump high 90s, as will closer Chase Burns (4-3, 1 sv) and top reliever Seth Halvorsen (3-3, 3.72, 2 svs). Third starter Drew Beam (8-4, 4.09) also has outstanding stuff and a Team USA pedigree. On the flip side, Southern Miss ace Tanner Hall (12-3, 2.08) counters with an 88-92 sinker and 81-84 changeup which is his best pitch. It’s two different ways to pitch, but equally effective. The Golden Eagles have more than just Hall to lean on. Billy Oldham (8-3, 4.33) and Matt Adams (3-2, 4,95) have been solid starters, while Justin Storm (6-2, 2.61/8 svs) and Kros Sivley (4-1, 4.02) have been so good in the pen.

4. Dustin Dickerson and Christian Moore – Raise your hand if you are a middle infielder that hit four home runs in a regional last weekend. I see two hands stretched upward. I see you, Tennessee second baseman Christian Moore, who slammed a homer in all three games and hit two in one of them for four this weekend. For the season, Moore now has 17 home runs to go with team-best 49 walks and 15 stolen bases. And I see you too, Southern Miss shortstop Dustin Dickerson who slammed four home runs in the Auburn Regional. Dickerson entered the regional with six bombs on the season but decided he best become a power threat to make sure his team advanced. He also leads the Golden Eagles with 20 doubles and is second on the team with 13 stolen bases.

5. Scott Berry’s journey – USM head coach had an up close and personal view of Southern Miss’s last Super Regional victory in 2009 at Florida. Then long-time head coach Corky Palmer had announced his retirement, and the Golden Eagles won a road regional and then a road super before a trip to Omaha, sending Palmer off in style. Berry has decided this will be his final season as the Southern Miss skipper, passing to torch assistant Christian Ostrander just the way Palmer, who passed away last August, handed it to him. Southern Miss won a road regional last weekend, but instead of a road trip to an SEC power, his club plays for a CWS berth at home. Will history repeat itself, and will Berry follow Palmer one more time to end his season in Omaha?

An Opposing Coach Breaks Down Tennessee

“I think when people think of Tennessee, they think about the home runs and the offense, but obviously, it’s a really good offense. With the pitching, you always feel like they’re going to be in the game because of those guys.

“Andrew Lindsey has just been phenomenal for them. At any point in time, you feel like Beam or Dollander can just sit there and get you six or seven innings and keep you in the game. So, I think that’s where it starts.

“You just feel like they’re gonna always have a chance to be in the game because of their pitching, and Burns has done a good job out of the pen. I think it kind of fits his personality. Halvorsen is another guy that just gives you a chance out of the bullpen, and they feel like they’re in the game and then mix and match from there on out. They got Connell, Sewell. They have all these guys that they can kind of match up and use for shorter stints. But if they need to go to the long game, they can with Burns. They can do it with Halvorsen. You just feel like they always have a chance to be in the game.

“The offense is not as explosive as it was a year ago. They’re not as deep offensively as they were a year ago. It depends on who’s going hot because they have a tendency to be streaky at times. Yeah, there are times when it’s Griffin Merritt. There are times when it’s Jared Dickey. Christian Moore is someone you just feel like he’s gonna give you a competitive edge. Every time Blake Burke steps in the box, you feel like he has a chance to leave the yard. It just depends on who’s hot and who’s not. When any one of are hot, stay away. But when they’re not, you can go at them, but it just depends on who has the hot hand. I don’t believe there’s a ‘guy,’ and in some ways, that could be good too. Because when you get one or two of those guys going at a time or all four of them going, that’s a really tough offense to stop.

“Defensively, they are athletic. There is some good defense, but Burke really struggles with first base. He’s the one liability on the infield that isn’t super solid. Ahuna can really go get it and moves to his left to his right, and he can come in on balls really well.”

An Opposing Coach Breaks Down Southern Miss

“First off, Scott has built a fantastic program. I have recruited and competed against him for years. They have always pitched real well, strong fundamentally, and tough-minded. They always get big hits. They are used to winning.
“Tanner Hall is a fantastic college pitcher. Anybody in the whole country would want him. But it’s not just him. (Ostrander) always does a good job developing, bringing guys along, and plugging guys into different spots when guys get hurt. They’ve got a lot of really good arms. Offensively, they got off to a slow start but kept improving. It’s a veteran lineup. I don’t think they ever hit the panic button. They have started to swing it better as the season moved on.
“On the left side of the infield, those kids have played a ton over there together. And they get big hits. Danny Lynch, the numbers don’t look great, but that kid comes up with clutch hit after clutch hit. And the shortstop Dustin Dickerson is a good all-around college player. Chris Sargent, Slade Wilks, Carson Paetow, those guys have played a lot of winning baseball. I thought adding Mathew Etzel at center field and the top of the lineup was a real good piece.
“Defensively, they make the routine plays. Early in the year, the kid that was playing second was struggling and made a few errors. They replaced him with the freshman (Nick Monistere). That was a good move because that dude can hit, and he’s a good defensive player.
“The pitching and timely hitting is their strength, and just having the veteran presence in that lineup. Weakness, I don’t know that they really have one. If I had to list something, not tons and tons of power, I’d say. They spread it out and make it work. I don’t think there’s a glaring weakness, maybe not a ton of team speed. They are a solid team, and they pitch it well. The whole is better than the sum of the parts in their case.
“They are at home, and the one thing you have to remember is this year, Scott announced that this is it for him. That’s something extra. And what a cool story to get him to Omaha in his last year.
“Southern Miss has been a blueprint for consistency going back to Hill Denson, Corky, and Scott, and they hired from within again with Oz. There’s a lot to be said about how they’ve run that baseball program over the last 40 years. In the day and age of coaches coming and going, their program has embodied solidness.
“Everybody really respects Scott Berry. He’s a true gentleman and a competitor. I always enjoyed competing against him. He’s very gracious, win or lose. And he’s a good example that you can be a tough-minded competitor and still be a really good guy.”

You won't have time to decide if the ball is just inside or outside or high or low. The question is

Can you put the bat on the ball? If you closely watch the ball your mind will slow that image down for you. You can hit the ball. Is it in range of your bat? I will be very surprised if there are many walks issued from Tennessee in these games.

Watch the ball.

GO EAGLES!!!

Just spoke with Coach Berry....

Didn't get to chat for long but here are a few things he stated..

1. Armistead would be his 3rd starter if they got to game 3. However, them not needing him in game 1 or 2 out of the pen is not a scenario that will probably happen.

2. Tanner amd Rodrigo told coach they wanted to start Monday. They weren't going to, but once both went to coach, it was a go then. That was a normal bullpen day for Tanner so no stran on his arm.

3. Will probably see Parker starting in LF. His bat is much needed in the 5 hole. Another one who told Coach Berry I am ready to step up and play and he did and earned his playing time. Ewing is the better fielder but Parker has played well.

Always grateful for Coach Berry always taking the time to speak with me every week. He doesn't have to but is always there and gracious when I ask. We sure need to take a second this weekend and be thankful a guy like Scott Berry being the HC. I personally believe he is the best HC in any sport in school history. If they make it to Omaha there will be no question he is the best.
