Opponent Preview: UTSA

The Roadrunners of UTSA will travel to Hattiesburg Saturday to take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. UTSA HC Jeff Traylor became the first head coach in UTSA history to win his first three games. UTSA is no stranger to close contests, as seven of the nine this season have been one-score ballgames in the fourth quarter. Southern Miss is coming off a tough loss to WKU in which they had a chance to either tie or take the lead at the end of regulation, but fell short.

11/18 Post Practice Interviews...

Tate:

Excited to be back with everyone. He felt as if he has had some really good practices.
UTSA defense is a lot like Eagle's from a scheme prospective
Not worried about taking big hit, that is the game he has played since he was a kid.
Timing and everything has been good this week no real adjustment once he gets back.

Portlock

He got his opportunity last wee and took advantage of it.
His sack was on an inside pressure blitz
Tackling was such an important factor last week
UTSA has a good duel threat QB and a good RB, will need to watch those.
He can play both Mike and Stinger LB.
He believes negative energy is contagious, his way of not getting down is to be positive, no adversity...
Once he graduates wants to be an architect.

Here are the 3 names that are supposedly tops right now in HC search.....

These are in no order

1. J Chadwell HC Coastal Carolina
2. K Womack DC Indiana
3. W Hall OC Tulane

Others that may be options..

R Lashley OC Miami
A Davis QB Coach Seattle

The Kane Womack as HC and bringing in Austin Davis as OC is something I am hearing more and more about.

Also hearing more chatter about Will Hall, he does recruit this area well. Look at the players Tulane has from the Pine Belt it will make one sick.

Chadwell is still, I believe, what everyone wants. It will depend on how the season plays out and if he gets bigger offers.

Tate

Heath - Do we know for sure that Tate will be back next week? Even though we all know we were screwed by Jack this week there is little doubt that Lowe will ever materialize into a successful leader of our offense.

I applaud him for sticking with us but he is literally no threat to pass which cripples the offense. Can’t you just see his athleticism taking over in high school but at this level everyone is as fast if not faster?

Monday Presser Quick Hits.....

Billings:

Really happy with how the team played. Got down by 10 early, but hung in there and couldn't make plays down the stretch.
Trey played better, but got to find ways to score points.
Feels he is seeing the old nasty bunch coming back.
Jack is no longer here, it is next up.
UTSA is explosive on offense.
Eagles are better on defense, but how much we will find out this week.
Offense will have to move the ball this week.
Believes Tate is back this week.
Portlock has really played well, came in went Latham went down. Played really well, the backups have done a really good job at LB. Hope to have Latham and Bozeman back this week.

Kubik:

Disappointed in Saturday's game
Feels like he didn't do a good enough job getting the ball to playmakers.
Even with everything is going on, no one is giving up
Tate traveled with the team last week. He feels he will be back this week.
They respect the decision Jack made, the timing put the team in a bad spot.
Trey had some nice throws in the game. He looked like a guy who was making his 2nd start.
Clopton is day to day right now, LPS has been solid, they will evaluate this situation more this week.
Perkins has really been productive the past few weeks. He has been injured most of the year, but is now healthy.
UTSA defense is very well coached and they do some things on defense when they change fronts, etc.
It is challenging to plan games for different QB's.

Pec:

Portlock is a very good intelligent football player. He took advantage of his opportunity.
UTSA has a very explosive offense. QB's are big, can run, and throw well, the OL is big and physical. They are a very good offense.
The defense is getting better. There was no Spring, only a 10 day football camp, they have continued to work hard and it is showing now.

T Doss.

It was hard at first when he got here from JUCO. He continued to work and eventually everything worked out.
Playing OL with all the different QB's is tough. You have to now which QB is back there and what they can do different.
UTSA front is one of the best in the league.
UTSA defense reminds him a lot of the Eagle's defense.

C Harrel

UTSA is not showing them anything they have not seen before. Eagles Just have to adjust to what they are doing.at times. He knows he is undersized. He has to use his quickness to compensate for that.
Coach billings has been great and keeps showing us support.
The biggest difference in their last 2 games was that they just decided to have fun and not worry about things.

11/17 Basketball Presser

Ladner:

He really likes the team and the mix of ages. It is gumbo of guys.
They still have a lot to learn about playing at the level of D1
They are very talented, but they need to tighten up things. Got to get better in defense.
They do not have exhibition games to work in, they have to be ready to play immediately.
Have to work on ball control and turnovers.
Hope to have a clean up week before their 1st game.
With 9 new faces it makes it difficult to install the offense.
you can't put a value on experience. Some guys come from situations where they are well prepared by coaches, some are not.
Takes time for players to learn how difficult it is to play this game at this level.
This team has a lot more guys that can shoot than last season. They have not shot that well yet and that is a byproduct of experience, reps, and chemistry. That will come.
This team has to also learn that you can affect the game by not only scoring., but play defense and execution as well.
The height and length of this team will be a much bigger difference. Will help on defense just as much as the offense. This team is much bigger in the post, but the biggest change of size in on the guards. Optically it is very noticeable.
Javarzia Belton has been blessed with a big athletic body. He is still learning to play and the speed of the game. He has always been the biggest, but has to learn to adjust to D1 basketball. It is a learning process and he knew that in recruiting.

Justin Johnson:

The biggest thing he is learning is to stay locked in and compete for a whole game.
Coach Ladner is teaching defense and their is still some for everyone to learn, but we are getting better.
This team is really good and can go far if we stick together.
To be the really good team, we must stick together on good days and bad days.

A Konontsuk:

The attitude of the team is different, everyone wants to be here and that is a huge difference.
As a Fr, I got a lot of min, i felt I improved over the season, especially in confidence at the D! level.
My advantage is that I can play outside or inside. IT depends on who is playing me.
Biggest thing I have to work on is staying low on my drives and not making fouls and ball control.
Having Mark on the team is great. We have known each other since we were 13. I always have someone to talk to in Estonian when I am upset and happy.
