For starters, I LOVED the energy of the coaches, players, trainers and all else involved. It’s definitely something special. I arrived at 10am, so this is all I was able to observe in an hour.
Lowe was pressured many times by the DL and was force to run many times; however, when he had to throw, he threw some nice passes. There’s been plenty coverage on Trey Lowe, so I’ll focus more on the backup QB competition.
Trey Lowe was the only QB who wasn’t live.
Here’s my one observation regarding the 2nd team offense. In the case for Ty Keyes, for him to perform as well as her did behind the 2nd string Oline, Ty has some great pocket presence. A few times the pocket collapsed and he had to escape the pocket for space on the outside to throw or keep it himself and scramble.
Also, had he been working with the 1st team WRs, he would have had some of his passes caught. Keyes’ passes were hitting some of the WRs in the hands and we’re very much catchable; though they had to stretch out to catch them, they balls hit them in the hands but the. WRs could not secure the catch.
One one play, Keyes dropped back at threw a 40 yd deep ball to a WR who was running a deep post; the ball was high and perfectly thrown and hit the WR in the hands, but he couldn’t maintain control.
On a red zone play, the WRs were well covered so Keyes ran it in himself for a 10 yd TD run to the right.
On the following goal line play, Keyes was under center. He took the snap and turned to his left to handoff to the RB who wasn’t there because they ran to Keyes’ right. Keyes kept it himself up the middle for the TD. Coach Hall praised Ty when he got to the sideline for making a s
Overall, Ty Keyes show good poise and pocket awareness. He showed great command of the offense in signaling the WR to go in motion, reading the defense and throwing strong and accurate passes, both over the middle and deep.
The only criticisms I can offer is the C’s snaps were really low on some plays, causing Keyes to have to bend down to get the snap. Also, a couple of Keyes’ deep balls didn’t have as much zip because a defender was in his face when he threw. As I stated earlier, had Keyes played behind the 1st team OL and WRs, he would have had better protection and more of his passes caught.
My observations of Webb, he was in on two drives which didn’t go far. He threw two medium range passes (one to right flats and one over middle) which were incompletions. On the incompletion in the right flats, I’m not sure if the WR didn’t know the play and ran the wrong route or what. On the incompletion over the middle, Webb overthrew the WR, throwing to far ahead of him. This was all I saw from Webb.
Back to the energy of the scrimmage, I LOVE IT. Coach Hall definitely has his team just as excited about Golden Eagle football as he is. Everybody from the AD, to training staff, video crew, and assistant coaches share the same enthusiasm.
