Equality of student and athletes

Maybe I'm remembering wrong but it seemed that sometime in the 1970's that school were moving away from having "athletic dorms" because it was ruled that students and athletes should have the same options on campus. It was somewhat of a time when equality between the students and athletes were being moved to being on par. Today we have P5 colleges with amenities that are almost theme parks for athletes but not for the average student. So what changed from the 70's in way of rules?

Extra Southern Miss basketball game added for tonight...

I got this in my email:

Hello everyone,

Wanted to fill everyone in on the ticket situation for tomorrow night's game vs Southeastern Baptist at 7:00 PM. I just spoke to the ticket office and they are in the process of emailing all season ticket holders with a new ticket(s)/parking pass for the game. Please be on the lookout for an email for the ticket office. It was mentioned that if you would like a physical copy of a ticket (non digital), to contact the ticket office directly.

Also, our pregame Hardwood Club social is canceled due to the increase in Covid-19 cases and exposure. Please bear with us as we were advised to put these on pause for the time being.

If there are any questions at all, regarding anything, my cell phone number is (513) 568-8587.

Thank you all for your continued support of our program.

An additional basketball game has been added to the schedule for Wednesday...

I followed up on the Southeastern Bible College schedule and results in one of their wins is in error. They actually lost to Stillman. One of their 3 wins was vs Delgado Community College in double OT by 2 points. This is a very bad team and anything short of everyone getting to play for Southern Miss in an overwhelming margin of victory game will be a disappointment.

Portal or Pothole for USM

So far, the portal has been beneficial for us for several reasons. 1. The influx of 9 Rivals 3-star players, most of them with SEC experience. 2. Winning games in the present and future competitions will depend on the number of 3-star players on a team's roster. Some of our best teams were the ones with a good number of threes. 3. The inside track has been established with our State's SEC teams. The more successful they become and enjoy their USM experience, more they will want to come here. Their presence here will also help in recruiting HS players. 4. It will also help dispel the theory that playing for USM is a lower caliber of football. 5. A number of the portal players are from the hinterland of Hattiesburg that may send a message to local kids to stay local with USM.

OT - Alabama LB in portal headed to Ark St

Alabama has lost a number of players, including four-star linebacker King Mwikuta, to the transfer portal since their championship loss to Georgia this past Monday night.

Alabama isn’t the only program experiencing such turnover. Even Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are losing players left and right to the portal. It’s just the current state of college football.

Mwikuta, meanwhile, has made a decision on where he’ll be playing football later this fall.

The former four-star linebacker is heading to the Sun Belt to play for Arkansas State.

“Holy hell. #AState has landed Alabama transfer and former unanimous four-star LB King Mwikuta,” writes Mitchell Gladstone of Arkansas Online. “He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining after playing in 13 games this season with 1 tackle for loss.”

Scholarship Numbers For Football

I know some of you have asked how many scholarship players are on the team and if they can still add some. This is somewhat confusing, so I will try and break this down for you.

As of right now (this is with signing class and transfers) the team has 83 of 85 (full amount allowed by the NCAA) scholarships filled. The ream can pick up 2 more scholarship players (this would have to be done over the summer by NCAA rules) and you can add them to next year's recruiting class.(robbing Peter to pay Paul) How many they sign depends on graduation, attrition, etc. but each recruiting class you want to sign 24 or 25 players. So, they can still add a transfer QB over the summer and he can play next season.

I hope this answers some of your questions about the numbers. If you have anymore please ask.

Basketball Question For Everyone

Ladner's teams have not finished higher than 7th (2020-2021) in the Western division of CUSA since his arrival. He inherited a really bad situation when he arrived, then even had to deal with Covid while trying to rebuild a team. However, so has other schools and that is no excuse. There is no upward trajectory in this program. Yes, he lost Hardy for the season, but LA Tech lost a stud early this season and has not looked back. With things seem to me moving towards leaving CUSA this Spring, is it time to make a move? I ask you all this.
