Congratulations Coach Monken

I'm very happy for this guy. I am sad to see him go. Every time I met him in public he was always very kind to me. He was one on one and very genuine. Coaching is like any profession you go where the money is. Unlike most other profession your not always guaranteed a pay check from one year to the next. Coach Monken took over a program that was coming off an 0-12 season, it took a little time but he put us back on the road to respectability. I wish him nothing but the best.

Recruit Reaction - Todd Monken to the Buccs

Have been touching base with a few recruits since the news broke:

Lorenzo Dantzler - "I am 100% committed to Southern Miss."

Jacques Turner - "It was shocking to hear the news, but it doesn't affect my commitment."

UPDATE: 5:02 PM

Wyatt Richthofen - "During the visit I committed not only to Coach Monken but the institution as well. On the visit I really got to know the staff and the players. I connected with all of them immediately and I felt comfortable on campus. I am sorry that I missed the opportunity to get coached by a great guy like Coach Monken. But I do know that he has to do what's best for him and it's a good opportunity and I wish him the best of luck with the Buccaneers! #SMTTT"

Will have more as they become available.

Splash hire....

I dont think this program needs a splash hire....I think we need someone who understand who and what Southern Miss football is and is built on. We need someone who understand that TM rebuilt this program. TM leaves this program very healthy and trending in a great direction. We need someone to continue the way this program has been rebuilt...the values, the hard work, the creativity. We need someone like Duggan or Lindsey. Someone to keep sailing the ship thats head and heels headed in the right direction.

I hope that our administration doesnt over think this process. Or try and get cute. Whats been going on here the past 3 years has worked. Just because the head coach leaves doesnt mean that you start over. Hopefully he taught his staff and encouraged them to participate in our growth. NOW IS NOT THE TIME to panic and overreact. Next man UP!! Duggan or Lindsey are my hands down vote.

OT: Home Town show...

On a lighter topic in the middle of this mess - Home Town debuted Sunday and I thought it was really good. For those who didn't see the earlier thread, it's a HGTV show set in Laurel. A couple helps someone new to Laurel restore an old home. One of our own USM grads got the first one. It is done really well. I personally felt a connection having spent a lot of time in Laurel growing up. Also, our USM grad was from Stringer where my grandmother was from. She thought Stringer was heaven. Spent many a Thanksgiving with my cousins in Stringer growing up. Anyway, great show. Hope all support it so it gets renewed.

Whoever the new coach is, everyone needs to accept the fact that...

If and when he wins, he will catch the first train out of town. We'll just have to be prepared to reload, and quickly.

I've seen several post along the lines of "Coach A will leave as soon as he can, Coach B will stick around." You're really gullible if you think anyone not named Jeff Bower will stick around. This goes back to the Bobby Collins days when he packed up and left after the best season in school history. Unless something changes, it's just the way it will always be here.

Even if it's just for 1-2 seasons, let's hire the guy that can win the most games in '16, and not even evaluate whether or not he'll stick around.

Interviews begin

Things are moving pretty as at Southern Miss considering the news that broke yesterday. So far the BGN cell phone has had multiple seizures and my email in box contains about 300 unread emails.

A source close to the search process has relayed some information to BGN and we have reason to believe that it is good, solid, legitimate information.

Sources tell BGN that Director of Athletics Bill McGillis will begin the interview process as early as this morning.

McGillis is expected to interview Southern Miss defensive coordinator David Duggan this morning. Later in the day we have reason to believe that McGillis will meet with Arizona State OC Chip Lindsey. The Lindsey meeting will likely be off campus.

A reliable source has told me that UAB head coach Bill Clark has expressed interest in the job, which would be kind of a splash hire.

In short folks, do not expect this to be a long and drawn out process. I expect a head coach to be in place by Thursday night.
