Practice Report: Southern Miss prepares for a tough Tulane team

Southern Miss held its weekly “competition Tuesday” as they prepared for a Saturday matchup with the Tulane Green Wave. The matchup, usually touted as the “Battle of the Bell,” will kick off at 3 PM Saturday from the rock..

Funding breakdown

Is there a place that would breakdown athletic revenues by funding types (student fees, ticket revenue, donations, media, game contracts, etc)? I remember seeing an article probably ten years ago in the clarion ledger or HA that showed that information for all 3 in state schools and I remember thinking the difference in donations/fundraising wasn’t that large and their surplus basically was their welfare check from the SEC. Would be curious to see how we stack up against SBC schools in the various different types. My thought would be that student fees is where we are falling very short compared to others, of course with the rising cost of college I imagine a day of reckoning is coming for all schools in that regard.

Big Concern

We just didn’t play well against a VERY strong Seminole team. Defense hung in there all they could but had to be exhausted with very little help from the offense. My biggest concern is the 16 penalties we had. We had 70 yards of offense in the first half and 68 yards of penalties. Not going to win many games with those stats. Effort penalties is one thing but absolutely STUPID penalties, which the majority of ours were, have to be dealt with and eliminated. Lack of discipline in this area cannot be tolerated.

Mike Norvell (Will he or won't he)

From one of the Hall interviews, he said he and Norvell have known each other for a long, long time, and he has great respect for Norvell. Although he did not say they were friends, I inferred they were. If so, there are two things friends don't do: one is not to let the other drive drunk, and two, they don't run the score up on each other. That being said, Norvell is caught between a rock and a hard place to make a splash nationwide, and to move up from 4th position, he needs to run the score up. What will he choose to do?

Just spoke with Jeremy McClain...

The RGC renovations are first on the list. We didn't go into full detail on that because I had other questions a only a few minutes...

Next will be a covered practice facility. Much like what South Alabama, UAB, Georgia Southern has come out with. It probably won't be a fully enclosed facility. The cost and getting permits for building codes and different aspects to a completely closed facility is complex. He mentioned that they are getting closer to announcing that and are still looking at different designs.

I asked if the conference is looking at picking up bowls from the Pac 12 dissolving. He mentioned he is not in those conversations but he is sure those are taking place at the conference level.

Just a few updates from Jeremy. We are really fortunate to have someone like him who will answer questions amd makes time for media. I hope this info is useful to you all....

A couple of things from the Alcorn Game.

I love Stanley, but he is going to get flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct if he continues to jaw with the opposition.

Why can we not find a kicker who can kick the ball in the endzone, or was he kicking it short to practice KO coverage? We don't want FS to have a return.

Can we please put black numbers on those gold jerseys? I can read the white numbers.

The new turf is beautiful.

What was the attendance for the game?
