I don’t understand the angst and self righteousness I’ve heard in the media and in college football circles about the Michigan situation. At its essence, Michigan apparently use facts that were publically available and then used technology to exploit the information. Is that wrong? Ok someone bought tickets for a Michigan staff person to attend Michigan’s opponent’s games an got video of the opponent’s signals? Why is that wrong ? They were free to buy tickets and I don’t know of any violation in video taping a ball game played in public. (Maybe there is but it would be some sort of copyright deal which is irrelevant here. ) Any obsessed baseball fan knows that technology has revolutionized scouting with spray charts, spin rates yada yada. Again it’s the application of technology to publicly attainable facts. Maybe the difference here is that Michigan apparently used AI in analyzing the info. So what? The Big 10 and NCAA better tread softly because I think they could lose in court.
