D1Baseball Weekly Chat: April 1 - Sunbelt Related

Andrew: Kendall, I asked you preseason how many bids you thought the Sun Belt would earn, and you said the conference would be good enough to ‘earn’ 5. Any other thoughts on that number a few weeks into conference play?
Kendall Rogers: I don’t think five bids is out of the question at all for the Sun Belt. As of right now, Louisiana, Southern Miss and Coastal Carolina would be slam dunks for me to make the field of 64. There are others who are in the mix now or would be in the mix with a solid second half of the season. 4 is probably the safest bet right now, but five is doable for sure.

Jordan: Who is the best team in the Sun Belt right now?
Aaron Fitt: Right now, I think you’d probably have to say Louisiana based on body of work. Certainly impressed with the Cajuns being 8-1 in the Sun Belt with a road sweep of Texas State and a home sweep of ODU. That Rice series back in February is a blemish, but the Cajuns are playing a lot better now — and most of the other top teams have more recent head-scratching blemishes.

Andrew: How close are the Cajuns to being ranked? Are they ranked with a 3-1/4-0 week coming up? I know the series against Rice early on is a significant blemish, but it’s a completely different team right now.
Kendall Rogers: Andrew — They are really close. They were probably team 26 or 27 this week. Ultimately, I agree that the Cajuns are a MUCH different team, but the fact remains, they went 0-3 in Houston and lost a home series to one of the worst teams in major college baseball. So, there’s a make up process related to that. The good news? They are red-hot and it appears they’ll more than make up for those blemishes. Andrew Herrmann and LP Langevin have been terrific, and the offense is getting into a groove as well.

Happy Easter Sunday.....

I hope and pray you. your family, and loved ones have a wonderful day!!!! He Is Risen!!!!!

On a lighter note: Which Easter candy is your favorite? Are you a Cadbury person, maybe a Chocolate Bunny (the solid ones not those that are hollow), or perhaps some Peeps (they have become rather elaborate with filled Peeps these days), my favorite are Starburst Jelly Beans!!!!

How Dalton McIntyre found his way into Southern Miss lineup

READ| Christian Ostrander admits that when he first went to recruit McIntyre at Meridian CC, he never envisioned him as the team's leadoff hitter and starting center fielder.

"Never in my mind did I think that's my leadoff guy for next year."

Happy Easter for He has risen from the dead

1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.
2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.
3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.
4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men.
5 But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.
7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you."
8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, "Greetings!" And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him.
10 Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me." (Matthew 28:1, ESV)

Happy Good Friday!

Happy Good Friday!

Matthew
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, "This man is calling Elijah."
48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink.
49 But the others said, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him."
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised,
53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!" (Matthew 27:45, ESV)

Luke
44 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,
45 while the sun's light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.
46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!" And having said this he breathed his last.
47 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, "Certainly this man was innocent!"
48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.
49 And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things. (Luke 23:44, ESV)

Just spoke with Coach Will Hall....

Wanted to get some updates about progress this Spring. Interesting thoughts from CWH....

1. I asked if he is getting any closer to having a true depth chart. He responded adamantly NO. He said Spring was about getting the young and new guys better and getting them adjusted to the way they do things. He did say that we will sit down with me once Spring is complete and give me his thoughts on what a depth chart may look like going into Fall.

2. He did say he had 1 spot left to fill. He also stated that he is sure a few guys will leave after Spring, that's just the way things go in the portal. He will fill those positions based on what he has seen this Spring, but has no idea now what he will do.

3. He is pleased with the overall performance of the team this Spring, especially with learning two new systems. He does have guys that are out this Spring but that was due to getting guys a chance to fully recover from the season before and injuries. He feels he knows what he has there.

Hope that answers some of your questions.

Football: It has been difficult to judge what progress has occurred in the Spring due to injuries.

The players in the OLine have been juggled around every practice due to injuries. There are 16 players with injuries and in the rehab process, with most on the defensive side of the football. This has allowed many 2nds to shine.
  • WR Davis Dalton re-injured a lower-body issue and left the scrimmage early. DT Cam Mackey will require surgery on the injured knee and is likely out until November.
  • Freshman Jalen Williams is really making his mark, and I would not be surprised if he were the starter in September.
  • This team will be the most talented in years. The depth is stable and will provide rest for the starters.
  • I will cite players that are standing out in practice in the next few days.
