FAU Hired two coaches (check out this story)

Talk about cutting your AD off at the knees

Chuck King of FAUowlaccess has the story of when Lane Kiffin was hired at FAU after the 2016 season.

The short version is:

  • FAU administration all wanted to hire Lane Kiffin
  • FAU AD Pat Chung couldn’t reach a deal with Lane
  • Chun then moved on and hired another (very successful) coach
  • However, without Chun’s knowledge, the movers and shakers at FAU had gone back to Lane and got the deal done
  • Chun made the case for the man he had already reached an agreement with; but to no avail
  • University President told Chun to back out of his deal, put on a big smile and introduce Lane Kiffin as “Our next head coach”
  • Chun subsequently left to become AD at Washington State
  • Kiffin has turned out to be an excellent hire

Q & A with Southern Miss Baseball Head Coach Scott Berry Pt. 1

Southern Miss finished last season with a 40-21 record, winning the CUSA Tournament Championship, and making their 4th straight NCAA Regional. The 2020 version of the Golden Eagles will be a much different team than the ones that have taken the field at Pete Taylor Park in the past. Gone are the days of getting runners on base and then waiting on a Home Run or one of the power hitters to bring runs in. This season it will be time to say "hello" to the small ball game and the Eagle's commitment to it. Big Gold Nation recently got to sit down and talk to the Golden Eagle Head Coach Scott Berry on a range of topics. Everything from the new turf, schedule, who had really a good Fall ball, and what this team will look like next season.

Position needs in the 2019-2020 recruiting class: Offense

During the next few weeks we will be looking at recruiting needs for Southern Miss football with this 2019-2020 recruiting class. Let's break this down by offense and defense. On offense there were some areas that Southern Miss attacked pretty aggresive last year. There are 2 position groups on the offense that looks to need immediate attention. So let's dive in and take a look at what Coach Hopson and staff may be looking at when trying to complete this recruiting class. Just be aware that due to numbers and the amount of players graduating, this class will be smaller that last year.

State of the Football Program

Oh how I wish our new AD would schedule a exclusive interview or press conference and voice his displeasure with where we are at as a program. Not to just hammer Hop but state the following:

1. 7 wins is not the goal at Southern Miss. Winning championships yearly is our goal.

2. We, being the U, the team, & the fans are a team. We need to be pulling together to improve our lot.

3. Either say he is behind Hopson & the process or say its time to go in another direction.

4. If the football program is on solid ground in regards to discipline, student athlete responsibility, & accountability then say so. Either promote the program or let’s start over.

We so need this at a program now & I hope he speaks up.

Someone help explain why

Eagle Nation should be optimistic about next year & beyond. As most of you are aware I typically give coaches a pass because I do not go on message boards after every loss and claim the coach is an idiot...etc. I also don’t pretend to know more about D1 football than our hired professionals. I can’t even imagine how difficult it is to get 18-22 year olds motivated & focused week in and week out. Having said all this these last 2 losses have been rough as well as State & La Tech. The only game we were truly overmatched was Bama but we continued to underachieve.

Give us some hope someone!!

Money, Money $$$$ new ways to make some for FB

I do not know how the financing works between the various schools and programs as USM. It may be that it is not possible to use tuition funds for the football program. If that is true, this may be around it.

Let’s take twenty businesses around Hattiesburg. Let representatives go to them and say “if you donate 100-200, or whatever to our football program we will guarantee at least 10-20 or whatever student customers to purchase items from your store”. They may also like to discount their items for the program. We would announce to all students that a new program (Like fund drive for eagles) is starting and we need volunteers. What is in it for the students? Well, each time they make a purchase at one of the businesses they are to keep their receipts. In turn, they would present them to the finance office and have the amount of the purchase deducted from their total tuition cost. After the money from the starting 10-20 businesses is exhausted then 10-20 new ones would be approached.

I know this may be a bit bazaar but we should sit down and think of ways to raise money for the football program or maybe someone could refine this idea. No reason not to use it for basketball as well. We are going to have to do it ourselves.
