2021 CUSA Baseball Tournament Bracket Released

Eagles will play Wed May 26 at 7:30 p.m. vs WKU.

FROM USM Press Release:

DALLAS – Southern Miss, who finished second in the West Division with a 22-9 league record, will be the No. 3 seed at the 2021 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Baseball Championship at the new J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston, La., May 26-30. The Golden Eagles will play No. 6 seed WKU at 7:30 p.m., March 26.

C-USA currently boasts three teams in the Top 25 rankings with No. 1 seed Charlotte (20), No. 2 seed Louisiana Tech (14) and the Golden Eagles (19) rounding out the representation. In addition, No. 4 seed Old Dominion and No. 5 seed Florida Atlantic also made appearances in the Top 25 this season, showcasing the depth of this year’s tournament field.

Along with the Championship pairings, C-USA also announced Sunday that Air Force Reserve will serve as title sponsor of the 2021 C-USA Baseball Championship.

“We are excited to welcome Air Force Reserve as the title sponsor for this premier event,” said Conference USA’s Chief Revenue Officer, Drew Mitchell. “We are proud to continue our partnership with Air Force Reserve and look forward to helping promote their mission along with educating our student-athletes, alumni and college sports fans on opportunities they have to serve our great country with a career in the Air Force Reserve.”

The Championship will feature the top eight teams in regular-season league play. The format is two double-elimination brackets with four teams each, with the winners of each bracket meeting in a single-elimination championship game. Southern Miss is the defending champion and winner of three of the last four tournaments. The 2020 C-USA Baseball Championship was canceled due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, when No. 4 seed Old Dominion battles No. 5 seed Florida Atlantic at 12:30 p.m. CT. Each squad entered the national top-25 rankings at one point during the season and face each other for the second time this spring. The Monarchs took 3-of-4 from the Owls in Boca Raton in early April.

The second game will feature No. 1 seed Charlotte versus No. 8 seed Middle Tennessee. Charlotte, which closed the regular season with six wins in its final eight games, will face a Blue Raiders squad that clawed its way into the tournament field in the final weekend with a pair of wins over FIU.

No. 2 seed and West Division Champion Louisiana Tech will play the 4 p.m. CT game in front of its home crowd, matching up with No. 7 seed UTSA. These teams concluded their regular-season series today, with the 14th-ranked Bulldogs taking 3-of-4 from the Roadrunners in Ruston.

The 2021 Air Force Reserve C-USA Championship will be played at a member home site for the first time since 2016 (Pete Taylor Park) and the 17th time in league history. The 2021 season marks the debut of the Bulldogs’ new facility, J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, after it suffered catastrophic damage from an EF-3 tornado in April, 2019. The venue was completely rebuilt in its same location and will host the league’s 25th championship. The Championship Game on Sunday, May 28, will be nationally-televised by CBS Sports Network, while all other games will be available on ESPN+.

Supporting Information for Hitter of the Week Nominee: Reed Trimble, a freshman from Brandon, Miss., finished the week with a .500 batting average (8x16) and hit safely in three of four games at Florida Atlantic. After starting off 0x3 in the opening game, Trimble went 6-for-8 in the Saturday doubleheader. In the opening game, he went 2x4 including a three-run homer. His home run added to a three-run second inning that gave the Golden Eagles the early advantage. He added a double to lead off the seventh and later scored to give the visitors one of two insurance runs in the final inning. In the nightcap, Trimble went 4-x4 including a double and two home runs to go along with a career-best seven RBI – one shy of trying a school record. It was his second two-homer game of the season. He doubled in his first at bat and then blasted a three-run homer in the fourth to help Southern Miss erase a 4-3 deficit, giving them a 6-4 lead en route to a five-run inning. Trimble opened the sixth with his second homer and later singled in the frame to drive home his final run of the contest. In the Sunday contest, Trimble homered in his second at bat, a two-run shot, to give him a team-leading 14 homers this season. He added a single and scored later in the contest. He was good on all five fielding chances over the weekend.

Supporting Information for Pitcher of the Week Nominee: Walker Powell, a senior from Fayetteville, Ark., tossed his fifth complete game of the season as he defeated Florida Atlantic 6-1 in the first game of the Saturday doubleheader. Powell, who threw a no-hitter in his previous outing, got the first eight hitters out to extend his streak to 26-straight batters retired before giving up back-to-back hits that accounted for the Owls lone run. After that, the Owls managed just two more singles and a double as Powell did not walk a batter and fanned seven in the contest. The win was the 29th for Powell, who tied Darrell Lindsey (1985-88) for the second most wins in school history as he also ranks No. 1 among career active leaders in the NCAA. It also marked the 10th complete game for Powell in his career. This season Powell is 9-2 in 12 starts with five complete games – one complete-game no-hitter and two other combined shutouts.

Notes
* Southern Miss and Pete Taylor Park were chosen as one of 20 potential regional host sites on Friday. Should the Golden Eagles earn a regional host spot, it will be the third time that they have hosted in its history. The other two times came in 2003 and 2017.

* The Golden Eagles played 10 doubleheaders during the 2021 season, sweeping five and splitting five, going 15-5 on days in which they played two games.

* Southern Miss has won at least 35 games in each of its last seven FULL seasons.

* The Southern Miss pitching staff finally surrendered its 100th walk of the year in its 50th game of the season. The squad is allowing just 2.08 walks per game and are on pace to give up the fewest walks since the 1980 season when that team allowed 101.

* With three quality starts this weekend, the Golden Eagles now have 27 to their credit this season – nine for Hunter Stanley, seven each for Walker Powell and Ben Ethridge and four for Drew Boyd.

* Hunter Stanley went over the 100-strikeout mark for the season last Friday and now has 105 for the year. He is the first Golden Eagle pitcher to hit the century mark since Nick Sandlin, now of the Cleveland Indians, posted 144 in 2018.

Here are the CUSA baseball tournament game times and brackets...

Southern Miss got into the night bracket which is good as long as there are no rain delays. I remember a tournament a few years ago when Southern Miss started games after 10:00 PM.

Players Ky'el Hemby thinks will stand out for Southern Miss football in 2021...

"Southern Miss will be amazing next season. RB Frank Gore Jr, LB Santrell Latham, corner Natrone Brooks, and corner Camron Harrell. We have vets up front with Jacques Turner and Eriq Kitchen. Watch out for everybody next season. "
