Monday morning Coach Berry conversation 2/14

It is always great to catch up with Coach Berry. Herr are a few.things he said about this past weekend.

He has 6 guys that will be starting games for them that pitched this past weekend, but they haven't named a rotation yet. Friday: Ethridge and Riggins pitched, Saturday: Stuart, Hall pitched Sunday: Waldrep, Boyd pitched. They will need 5 starters throughout the season because of a few 2 times gamed during the midweek.

Mazza will be brought along slowly sort of the way Shepard was. He has surgery on his nonthrowing shoulder and they want to make sure no issues there. They are really impressed with his delivery and the speed of his pitches. He will get more time on the mound as the season progresses.

Coach is close to making a decision on corner outfielders. He has an idea in his head, but not ready to make it official. It is a lefty heavy group.

The team played much cleaner baseball this past weekend than 2 weeks ago. The errors and mistakes were not near as bad.

He went and visited with Coach Palmer and said he is doing well. He asked for everyone to please remember him in their thoughts and prayers.

Nothing like baseball season and it starts Friday night!!!

Men’s basketball question

I love basketball but don’t know a great deal about the Xs and Os. I am totally amazed how we can, game after game, play very good basketball teams even for large parts of the game, and then fall completely apart for a short period and get hammered, mostly late in games. Do we we have a bunch of guys playing too many minutes, and we die late in games? Are opposing coaches scheming us at half time and taking us out of our game? I know basketball is streaky but our team has followed this frustrating pattern in most of our games. Anybody got any answers or even speculation?

Southern Miss has a new softball commitment...

I suspect this player's club coach had something to do with it.

Just had a conversation with Coach Berry (2/7)

They team seemed to let the elements get to them on Saturday which caused them to give up runs later in the contest. (Coach wasn't there for personal reasons)
He felt that Sunday was a much better scrimmage but they were still making errors which caused a few runs. He is OK with the errors now because those can be fixed before the 18th. He won't be happy if they are committing those when the season starts but believe they will be fixed.
They have still not set a rotation yet. That is still a work in progress.
They are still trying to find some corner outfielders. No one has stepped up and taken hold of those yet. No one has shown their offense to be so strong that they must play and defense can be learned in the early season.
He said the infield and CF is set. Everyone is returning in the infield with Johnson and Montenegro at catcher and Gabe will be patrolling CF. (For future refrence we will say the Poch is the catcher and Monty is CF when posting about the Montenegro brothers)

Is a framework for a USM basketball team that can win being constructed for the future?

The basketball team has not been winning much going only 2 - 13 the last 15 games. This season is over and in my mind, the most important thing going forward is seeing the framework being laid for next season and the season after that. If Napper, Bolden, Pickney, Moore, Hardy, Stevenson, and Pierre all return next season and Korenstuk does return after a year playing in Europe the team will be better than the team right now, but how much better? The team has been deficient in 3-point shooting for more seasons than I can remember and even if all of the above-mentioned players return, in my opinion, the team still needs 2 players that are consistent 3-point shooting threats.
