Golden Eagles work on details in preperation for Tulane

The Golden Eagles returned to practice this week in preparation for their January 4th game vs. Tulane in the Armed Forces Bowl. Every player and coach has insisted that to get to where they were as a team when they played UAB and UNT, that they must work n the small details of the game. Sure this is important and can not be overstated how being a more cohesive unit on both sides of the ball can only help, but to me, there is so much more to be worked on than that. Sitting back and watching practice, then going back to watch the last 2 games of the season, I have come up with 3 things the team could do to beat Tulane on Fort Worth.

Mtn. West new TV deal...

FOX WINS MOUNTAIN WEST RIGHTS FROM ESPN

  • Fox Sports has reached an agreement with the Mountain West to carry a package of the conference’s football and basketball games that formerly was held by ESPN. Separately, CBS Sports Network renewed its package of MWC games. My colleague Michael Smith and I are told that the Fox and CBS deals combined will be worth about $35 million annually -- around $20 million from CBS and $15 million from Fox. The length of the deals is not clear yet, but MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson has said that he wanted shorter terms than the 10-year deals the MWC had previously. The games in the Fox package are expected to run primarily on FS1.

  • The new Fox and CBS contracts, which will go into effect July 1, provide the conference’s 10 schools -- not including Hawaii and Boise State, which have separate arrangements -- with a significant revenue lift. Under the old contracts, those 10 schools made $1.1 million per year, per school. That per-school figure should jump to about $3 million or more. The league’s media deals are complicated because Boise State’s home games are negotiated separately from the rest of the conference. In the previous arrangement, Boise was paid a $1.8 million annual bonus, a deal negotiated in 2012 when the school jumped to the Big East and then quickly returned. Thompson has said that Boise will continue to receive a bonus above what other MWC schools get as an incentive to keep the Broncos in the league. Hawaii also has a separate deal, as it is a football-only member of the MWC.

  • Fox is now in business with five FBS conferences -- the MWC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and Big East. The network also is believed to be in the running for the SEC’s package of 15 football games that CBS currently has. Even though Fox won the bidding, ESPN will continue to have a bowl relationship with the Mountain West and work with the league on playing in the early-season basketball tournaments. The MWC worked with Wasserman as an adviser on the deal.

Apple Held Preliminary Talks With Pac-12 Conference, MGM
Tech giant is considering ways to broaden the appeal of its Apple TV app and TV+ service that launched with nine original programs

Apple Inc. has been exploring opportunities to strengthen its upstart TV service, including deals for James Bond franchise-owner MGM Holdings Inc. and college sports rights, according to people familiar with the matter.

Executives at Apple met with representatives of MGM and the Pac-12 Conference this year as the tech giant considers ways to broaden the appeal of its Apple TV app and TV+, a $4.99 monthly service that launched last month with nine original programs. The streaming service anchors an updated TV app that offers subscriptions to Disney+ and HBO, with Apple getting a cut of sales.

Though the conversations with MGM and the Pac-12 were preliminary and have yet to reach an advanced stage, the talks show Apple’s openness to striking a multibillion-dollar content agreement in support of its TV service—even as it forges ahead with a preferred strategy of developing its own shows, these people said. A deal with the Pac-12 would be Apple’s first foray into live sports.

Apple is playing catch-up in a TV arms race with Amazon.com Inc. and others seeking to displace traditional cable operators as the dominant media service in people’s homes. Consumers have turned to services such as Netflix Inc. as they sever ties with cable operators. Amazon and Apple are looking to increase their revenue by selling subscriptions to their own streaming-video services and rival offerings from competitors.

Amazon Prime Video service, launched in 2006, has become a hub for an estimated $2.6 billion in subscription sales to channels such as Showtime and Starz, according to BMO Capital Markets. The company has netted those sales from customers drawn to an Amazon video service that offers original shows, licensed movies and National Football League games.

Apple’s updated TV app and TV+ programs mirror Amazon’s offering but provide a fraction of the shows. A deal for sports rights or a film library could deepen the offering and pull in more users who might also sign up for subscriptions to Disney+, HBO and more.
