Time for A Coaching Change,

  • Ok, nothing against Scotty, but he is in over his head. We need a coach that is a little older than six or seven years than the boys he is coaching. I am going to say two names that have already been brought up, some want some don't, Briles and Freeze. First Briles. The NCAA never found anything on him and never sanctioned him but they did his assistant coaches. He is coaching high school football in Texas and is doing well. If he will work for high school pay to get his foot back in the door he would take what we could pay him to get back into college coaching. He doesn't need the money, (he is a millionaire) several times over. He just wants the chance and if we give it to him he would bring us back to respectability and to a point to where we could pay him more or he would either leave. Or he just might stay because we gave him a chance. Now Freeze. If he came, we would win, and he can recruit. Unlike Briles, who would appreciate us giving him a chance, Freeze would leave for a P-5 job if it is the one he covets as soon as it is offered to him. That is okay though, because that means he has made a winner out of us and made him and us look good, and by doing so he will leave us in good shape for the next young OC to come in and make his mark for three or four years and he will move on. Hopefullly one day the wheel will stop and we will have made enough progress that we can afford to pay a coach to want to stay and we will have built up our attendance, alum and donations. Until that day, if we don't want to have to drop down a level or two, we need to take a chance on Briles or Freeze. Guys, this is the bottom of the ninth, two out, and bases are loaded and we are down by three, and if we want to stay in the game we have to take a chance. No more taking a chance on coaches that want to retire here, or they want this to be the last job of their career. It is time to roll the dice and get a winner. It doesn't matter if we are their stepping stone or not, it happens to all G-5 schools all the time. We do it to. If someone offers us a better job for more money we have to consider our family and our future. We are no different except no one is offering us millions a year to be an accountant, or chef or teacher. But remember this old saying, and it still holds true today, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! If you don't believe me just look at, EJ, JH, and how they ruined our program and we still have't recovered and we won't unless we make the right choice.

Low Point

The lowest point in football that I remember was in 80’s or 90‘s, I think just before the Favre era. We were playing Florida State in Hattiesburg with few fans at the game & Lee Corso on Sports Center had predicted us to win, but no one else had. At the start of the game our runner broke loose for a long TD run putting us up 7-0. FSU scored the next 63 points completely dominating us. I am afraid we are back to that point.

I know its hindsight and Its Covid year

But how thin we are really hurts on defense. Our defensive line has no impact on the game. We have LB that must play the entire game and when the best one gets thrown out of the game we really are in trouble. I know there are never great defensive lineman or Linebackers floating in the Portal but I worried about this since last fall. I see a lot of promise in the young receivers and the offensive lien has improved since first game until second half yesterday when Tulane just smelled blood and pinned their ears back. But we are out of shape we were spent by end of second quarter, no depth.

We have fallen so low...

that I will pay for Hugh Freeze's burner phone if he will come here as football HC and make us relevant again...And before any of you get self-righteous on my post, we are so desperate right now that we have to do whatever it takes before USM football dies, for real! We are running out of time to fix this! Help me help you! Get Freeze, Briles, anyone, PLEASE!

We scull drug Tulane every year that I was at USM in the early 2000s...I literally got sick to my stomach and had to turn off the game today.

We need to decide......

if we are going to get serious about football or not. We are getting left behind by damn near everyone and the only way out of this is to invest in this program. I know I’m preaching to the choir on here but we’ve got to make moves and make football a priority again. I fully understand that we will not get any help from the state or by adding any student fees, so we have to fundraise. McClain needs to come out with a campaign complete with renderings and a pathway to achieve the goal of improving facilities. I think a solid hire for football coach would go a long way in generating excitement toward this campaign. We need to do something we’ve never done and that’s make a splash hire, a common name in the college football world. Yeah we got to pay the man and yeah we’re broke. But if we are serious about this, it has to happen. Will Hall is not going to turn this around. Johns at Memphis won’t do it either. I think a Briles or Freeze would inject life into this program overnight. JM has to find a way. Get the coach and then fundraise your ass off for that indoor practice facility, it has to happen or this is over. I don’t think there’s much of a choice here, if we’re serious, it’s got to be 1 of those 2 guys. Bennett needs to get over himself and get out of the way and allow this to happen. It’s a steep uphill battle and it will take a lot of people but it has to happen if we’re ever going to be remotely relevant again.

Jay Hopson

so when did Hopson unofficially quit the program? Did he just go through the motions all of last year & through Covid & this season. I wonder if it was when the Baylor dude was denied?
The players & coaches seem so inadequate right now it reminds me of Monken’s first year. The AD should have seen this crash coming and addressed it. Sad & we are starting over all over again.
