For Southern Miss, tomorrow will mark the first CUSA football game in the College Football Playoff era in which one of the two teams on the field will be a top 25 team. It will not be Southern Miss.
This season has been that of many repeated issues needing to be fixed, not being fixed, and seemingly getting worse in some spots (see: quarterback position, offensive line). Tomorrow, a different verse of the same song will be spun on the Will Hall Debut Album at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio - might want to put some earplugs in, Eagle fans.
It also remains true that some positives can be had in this one. Young guys (who can still retain a redshirt) will have an opportunity to see what a rebuilt, high-quality roster looks like. UTSA has no glaring weakness on either side of the ball and look to be primed to win a conference championship early in the tenure of Jeff Traylor.
Throw it up, throw it around, run as many fumble-rooskis as is legally allowed, put Frank Gore, Jr. in the wildcat, sell out for turnovers, and pray you don't have 7 more quarterbacks go down against the best pass rush in the league.
College football is a strange sport, and stranger things have happened than the worst beating the best in Conference USA. Try everything, leave nothing on the field, and see what happens. Southern Miss has nothing left to lose in 2021.
What are you keys to the game? What has to happen for Southern Miss to pull off a win in what is the biggest spread against a CUSA opponent in Southern Miss football history?
