Southern Miss baseball Fall World Series report from HubCitySpokes...

Heath…about recruiting

Heath…got a few questions

1. In regards to football recruiting, any word on any particular JUCO OL Coach Hall & staff are on really hard? Not sure if Hall is trying keep them a secret or anything, just wondering what our OL recruiting scope is as far as JUCO & transfers go.

2. I heard Coach Hall say during last Saturday’s pre-game interview on Rock104, that Fr WR Richard Mays Jr wouldn’t play this season. Any word on why?

3. I really believe the offense would perform better with an OC and maybe even a QB Coach. Do you think a coach Hall at least hires an OC during the off-season?

I Watched College of Charleston....

....play UNC last night. UNC won by 11 but it was a very competitive game. Charleston has had good teams the last few years and went to the NCAA's a couple years ago. This is what I found interesting. Their roster breaks down like this 4 Freshman, 3 Division 1 transfers, 2 Division 2 transfers and a JC transfer. That transfer portal is gold in todays game if your staff knows how to use it. You have to have a coach who kids want to play for and knows how to sell it.

I Read An Article Recently.....

....that lamented that Connecticut is the once proud school that was left behind and decimated by the conference re-allignment. I beg to differ. USM had a proud history in football and was almost always competitive against the money laden power conference teams. Look at where we're at today. Teams we beat with regularity, Tulane, Memphis, Louisville, ULL etc., we can't touch today. We were the school left behind by the BCS and re-allignment. Our football and basketball programs are a disgrace. Sad to say, but with what we have to offer, I see no way out. Without the money to hire better coaching staffs, we are doomed.

Bobby Collins

I just heard Coach Collins passed away today and do not know any details. For our seasoned fans, we well remember Coach Collins and what he did for Southern Miss by being the first to put us in national prominence. He beat State and Ole Miss then tied the Bear in Birmingham. From one old Eagle, thank you Coach Collins and Rest In Peace. Condolences to his family and many fans.

Gameday Eve vs. UTSA thoughts..

For Southern Miss, tomorrow will mark the first CUSA football game in the College Football Playoff era in which one of the two teams on the field will be a top 25 team. It will not be Southern Miss.

This season has been that of many repeated issues needing to be fixed, not being fixed, and seemingly getting worse in some spots (see: quarterback position, offensive line). Tomorrow, a different verse of the same song will be spun on the Will Hall Debut Album at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio - might want to put some earplugs in, Eagle fans.

It also remains true that some positives can be had in this one. Young guys (who can still retain a redshirt) will have an opportunity to see what a rebuilt, high-quality roster looks like. UTSA has no glaring weakness on either side of the ball and look to be primed to win a conference championship early in the tenure of Jeff Traylor.

Throw it up, throw it around, run as many fumble-rooskis as is legally allowed, put Frank Gore, Jr. in the wildcat, sell out for turnovers, and pray you don't have 7 more quarterbacks go down against the best pass rush in the league.

College football is a strange sport, and stranger things have happened than the worst beating the best in Conference USA. Try everything, leave nothing on the field, and see what happens. Southern Miss has nothing left to lose in 2021.

What are you keys to the game? What has to happen for Southern Miss to pull off a win in what is the biggest spread against a CUSA opponent in Southern Miss football history?
