Coastal Carolina update (QB injury)

Grayson McCall

No other CCU qb has completed more than 2 passes this season. McCall has thrown 21/22 TD passes while throwing a single INT all season.

This just got very interesting.

Really really good article on Will Hall and Cadillac Williams (and Armstrong)

Did not know this about Hall/Armstrong and their connection with Auburn's interim Head Coach. Really interesting.

Here Goes. The QB situuation and Why

As we know, Keyes was scheduled to be our QB this year without any doubt. Even though Keyes was a little rough around the edges, no reasonable attempt was made to procure a portal or transfer-in QB. Any starting QB for us is destined to get hurt, and so it happened. The problem emerged when it came time to choose a backup.

Hall was then bound and determined to make Wilke a QB. The OL in the first few games did a reasonably fair job in protection, but Wilke made error after error. His passes sometimes flutter through the air with no apparent destination and too often find their way into an opponent's arms. Everyone, except Hall, knew the kid was not a D1 QB. Nevertheless, Hall was stubborn and would not explore the possibility of starting another QB.

As Clawed has said, we do not have a d1 QB, and the ones we have do not show they are willing to take one for the team. Sliding too short, and my pinky finger hurts. If the finger were not broken, PW would have said, "get your ass back in there boy."

So now, where do we go? In all likelihood, Hall will start Wilke again instead of Lowe, and that may not be a bad idea because CC will be blowing in the backfield faster than a Texas twister. However, we must save Lowe for the last two games.

It may be a good idea for Hall to make the entire team watch that game film over and over this week. Then, I would have the OL running the stairs at the coliseum. Then, I would have the defense practicing on HWY 49.

I would like to see Hall play McCormick this week. While being a walk-on, he may be the answer next year. Although he is far from being ready, the experience would be good. He has a 3.8 GPA, so learning the four plays we have shouldn't be a big deal.

One of the worst mistakes Hall made was not pursuing talented O lineman. Instead, his answer was to hire Gregg, which was OK, but you can't make perfume out of doo-doo. The guys we have now can not cut it even when they are seniors.

Hall is as good of a coach as we could have hired, but he must use his head. He does a pretty good job recruiting and is a good person. I am not saying he must go. He will do a good job for us, and I like him. It's just business. We will make it to a bowl. Toilet or otherwise.

11/8 Practice Quick Hits

Hall is not commenting on who the starter is. He said they will all play. Get ready for the superback.

Caston will be back this week.

Practice was good today. No residual effects from this weekend.

The Coastal Carolina QB is extremely good and will be a challenge

*Something to consider. Coastal Carolina is giving up a bunch of points this season. They got beat at home (homecoming) by ODU 49-21 which was their only loss this season. The SBC is a crazy conference. CCU is not beating people like a drum, they are just getting by in most cases.

Can we hire...

An OC now?

I don't care who you are and what situation you are in, with the weapons we have at the skill positions we should be able to move the ball better than we did and have all season. I think Hall is growing into the HC position and certain has more learning to do... but man he has got to bring in someone who can take play calling off his plate and someone who can devote more time during the week to coming up with ways to move the ball given our limitations (i.e. struggles finding a QB and poor OL play). Even with the 60 point game earlier in the year, there was no creativity and ingenuity on offense. When guys like Gore, Mims, Clay, Brownlee, Richard, Pittman and Willis get in space they are special and make things happen. We struggle getting them in space, and that is mostly on play calling. Fair amount on execution, but mostly play creativity and adjusting what's not working.

SBC Monday Coach Presser Quick Hits

Will said they were beat in ever way by GSU. They will get back and work this week, more coach speak.

Asked about QB and the portal. Said they would evaluate and if a QB is in the portal they belive is good, they will go after him. There is no magic wand to wave to land one. They went after some this past offseason. He did say that a lot of QB's are in the portal because they aren't good in he first place.

Didn't commit to a starter at QB this week.

That is about it....

Both Southern Miss basketball teams start season Monday vs William Carey...

Biggest Game of the Year This Saturday?

Yes.

  1. We will be eligible for a bowl for the first time in what seems like forever.
  2. Keep the win streak going.
  3. We are favored to win by 2.5 and we don't want to drop in the RPI (we are at a sad 80).
  4. The fan base growth.
  5. Keep the team confidence high.
  6. Keep alive the hope for a West title.
  7. This is the first meeting with this team. We want to establish dominance over then and not let it be another Troy and USA where they have established dominance. Anyone have another reason?
