It could've been much worse folks

JHOP wasn't in my top 3 but I'm going to give him a chance to win me over. Dude has done some great things at Alcorn. There is alot to be said about a passionate fb coach. JHOP wanted this job as bad as anyone probably ever has. There have been some tremendous successful coaching stories in the last decade of younger up and coming guys getting a shot that many doubted they deserved to be a HC. I mean what if JHOP turns out to be the next Freeze, Mahalzon, Briles, Paterson. I mean Chizik won a Naty and when he was hired even the diehard AU people scratched their heads. I believe we have seen the worst HC coach ever in Elias Johnson. JHOP will not be another EJ. JHop has to much pride and passion as a coach and for himself to ever let that happen. Like I said JHOP wasn't my favorite candidate but he wasn't nearly my least favorite either. Here's to JHOP getting it done at Southern Miss!!

I Don't Know If Hopson....

....will be a good Head Coach here or not but you have to give him credit for guts. He saw what he wanted and he took risks to it. The Alcorn job could have been a career-ender both in terms or results and perception. I have to give him credit for having the guts to chase his dream and have enough confidence in himself to take risks along the way. I'm on board with this hire.

Afternoon Trends

Alright guys from all the various bits of info I am getting there is more chatter trending Hopson than anyone else this afternoon.

I am not ready to say he's the guy but he seems to be trending to the top of stack.

Rivals Kentucky staff do not believe Gran is still in it, but they admittedly don't have a lot off contacts close to him because hes only been there a few weeks.

Anything can happen but that is the latest from multiple sources.

Could this be a plot by Monken gone wrong?

Just curious... Could it be, that Monken was thinking with Chip gone, if he left at the last minute, Duggan would be the unquestioned hire to replace him with so many things at stake, right before signing day?

Maybe that was the plan, and it backfired because BM knew this day would come and had already start compiling his list.

Because of all the issues going on with big donors right now BM could not pull out his A1 list (not enough time) but he had a list ready of quality candidates in case of emergency... Such as this.

I know, one of my crazy theories again... Or is it really crazy ?

Im okay with Hopson

Great guy. Good Head Coach he managed a Football program as good as anyone on the FCS level. I think that will translate over well as our Head Coach. He knows Mississippi and Louisiana he knows Southern Miss. I think he retains Duggan and the two of them will work together in restoring Nasty to the Nasty Bunch. He may bring in his Offensive Coordinator to help Co Coordinate with Coach Woz and together combine offensive philosophies. This ain't the hire I wanted but its one I can support. Welcome Back to Hattiesburg Coach Hopson. SOUTHERN MISS TO THE TOP!!!!

Southern Miss hires Alcorn State's Jay Hopson

Southern Mississippi moved quickly to find its new head coach.

Six days after Todd Monken left the program to become the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, athletic director Bill McGillis announced the hire of Jay Hopson as head coach. Hopson spent the past four seasons as head coach at FCS Alcorn State, where he notched a 32-17 overall record and won back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference titles in 2014 and 2015.
