As we say every week (lol) this is a huge week for Southern Miss Baseball. But it could be more defining than even the last week of the season. We sit with a one game lead, while FAU and Rice have to play each other this week. As long as neither one sweeps, we won't have to either. However, as I stated in another post, we have a really good opportunity to put a choke on CUSA for good during the regular season.
I believe the FAU and Rice series will be won 2-1.... Our best case scenario is that it is FAU. If we can sweep this weekend, and FAU beats Rice 2-1, that will give us a two game lead going into the final week of the season.
Another way to look at it is if Rice wins 2-1, then we need a sweep. If FAU wins 2-1, then we only need to win 2-1. I know sweeping a team is not easy and also winning a series at Rice is as just as tough. But we have a good chance this week to create a little spacing. Doing this would break the curse of 1 of 2 things our sport programs have been bad at:
1. Seizing the moment (killing the fly with the sledge hammer, so others won't have a realistic chance)
2. If this weekend turn out like we hope, then we only hope we dont follow up a dream weekend, with a subpar series tilt going into the CUSA tourney.
Over the last few years, in (INSERT USM SPORT HERE), we have been right there at the finish line (in most cases leading the way) the last 2 weeks of the season..... Somehow we have always been cursed, in all of our sports, to have that sub par performance at the wrong time, costing us a share of a title, in most cases the coveted outright championship.
Heres to the baseball team finally breaking that curse for all our sports to start seizing the moment when the spotlight (national attention) is on us.
