Three former Golden Eagles – Quez Watkins, DeMichael Harris and Drake Dorbeck – realized their dreams from a safe distance this past weekend by each getting a call to go compete in the NFL.
Coach Jay Lander and the Southern Miss basketball program continues to keep the recruiting momentum going forward with the recent commitment of 6'7 212 lbs SG Justin Johnson. The # 13 ranked basketball player in JUCO (JUCO Recruiting) is another that will come in and look to play immediately. With the recent transfer of Gabe Watson to Tulane, the Golden Eagles needed a guard who can drive and create his own shot, Johnson can do just that. He averaged 16.9 ppg, shot 50% from the floor, and 35.7% behind the arc, while grabbing 5.8 rpg.
Did you guys know that he owned a Busch Series race team with Dale Jarrett? I was doing research and found this. Also old DJ visited Southern Miss once or twice, i believe. I actually met him in Biloxi 2 or 3 years ago when his son played baseball at Charlotte. I found this interesting.
....moments for USM Athletics. Mine has always been this, What If Bobby Collins wouldn't have left for SMU? He was extremely popular with our fan base. He had the program poised for a significant rise in status. He and his staff were very effective recruiters and had made inroads all through the State. We had effectively passed OM and MSU in status and the future looked bright. What would have happened?
Jay Ladner. He will be joining me for the whole show to discuss the recruiting class, update on NCAA Transfer Rules, and to answer your questions. So leave your questions in the comments below.
There are man times you hear coaches say, "this kid is a Southern Miss guy." When it comes to Blake Roberts, he is he perfect example. It would be almost impossible for him not to bleed black and gold. His father, former Golden Eagle QB and ESPN 3 play-by-play announcer Lee Roberts, and his mother are both Southern Miss graduates.
About his son playing basketball and the interview went in a really fun direction and I will be posting an article about Lee and his Wife and this chapter in their lives. He is a great guy and ambassador for Southern Miss.
Coach Jay Ladner and Southern Miss Basketball got a shot in the arm early during recruiting season with the commitment of PRCC PG Tae Hardy. When asked about Tae, Coach Ladner described him like this, "He was the best basketball player on the best JUCO team in the country." Tae started his college career at ECU before transferring to PRCC where he averaged 16.6 ppg, 3 rpg, shot 52% from the floor and 37% from behind the 3 pt line, while also dishing out 3.7 apg. A young man who is a plug and play game changer is hard to find, but the Golden Eagle coaching staff believe he is that guy.
