A "Thank You" to the Southern Miss administration, coaches, and fans

As many who are reading this already know, the last month has been a trying time in my life. I came very close death in the ER and had to have emergency surgery on my left leg. The doctors did all they could to save my leg, but in the end, due to an infection, the leg had to be removed from knee down. I will be honest, for about the first week I was truly depressed.

Conference USA: Scheduling changes coming soon
MAY 31, 2020 BY MATTHEW BARTLETT

Conference USA athletics scheduling changes are on their way with modifications to the upcoming fall sports calendar expected soon.

The extended offseason has been a busy one for Conference USA and its member institutions and conversations among league officials and athletic directors about the structure of future schedules have been at the forefront.

“I don’t think there’s any question that our geographic stretch is a challenge for us,” Rice Athletic Director Joe Karlgaard said. “Pre-pandemic it was something that we made work. I think post-pandemic it’s something that we are really looking closely at.”

Ideas have been tossed around from sources inside and outside of Conference USA. Basketball is expected to end bonus play and could consider moving to a divisional structure to reduce travel. Olympics sports, in particular, are taking a hard look at more regionalized scheduling.

Administrators are also keeping an eye on what’s happening across the nation. The MAC cut postseason tournaments in several sports. Those changes reflect the historical Ivy League model, which traditionally awarded regular-season champions with any relevant postseason bids.

What will those changes look like? Karlgaard said the scope was far-reaching. “All of that is on the table for us to evaluate going forward.”

This is not smoke and mirrors. Karlgaard has already been in discussion with Athletic Directors at schools in close geographic proximity. “They’re all interested [in regionalized scheduling],” he said. “What form and shape that takes, I think, is going to take longer for us to hash out.”

Long term scheduling adjustments will take time to play out, but changes to the upcoming seasons are imminent. Karlgaard indicated that he expects Conference USA to address fall scheduling as soon as this week, particularly with athletes now allowed to return to campus at several member schools. Rice had not yet set a timetable for the return of their own student-athletes.

Football thoughts about the Favre era 1989

There have been other seasons that hurt me but 1989 was the first to do it. 1988 had been such a fun season that my hopes were sky high for 1989. We had a really hard schedule and it was just too much for us. The season started with an incredible upset of #6 Florida State. And then,..

One of my friends had an apartment in a house across Hwy 49 from the Rock and we would tailgate there and then walk across to go to the game. It was a beautiful fall day and we were playing Mississippi State at home. It was a great atmosphere. And then we lost. It was the first time we had lost to them in a while. It had already been announced there would not be a new contract and this was the last of the two games on the current one. It had been decided the last two would be moved from the Jackson stadium to a home and home. Brutal loss after the high of beating FSU.

The next three games were at Auburn TCU and Texas A&M. All losses. The TCU game the only one that was close.

Then we beat Tulane at home. We beat Louisville at Louisville.

Then we lost to a Brian Mitchell led Southwestern Louisiana at home in a close game.

Then we beat Memphis at Memphis.

Went to Alabama and lost.

And finished the season beating East Carolina at home.

If I remember right the FSU game was a home game we sold and was played in Jacksonville.

The away schedule was brutal. Auburn, TCU, Texas A&M, Louisville, Memphis and Alabama.

Home we had Mississippi State, Tulane, Louisiana Lafayette and East Carolina.

We ended the season 5-6.

Football thoughts about the Favre era 1988

I was looking forward to Southern Miss football in 1988. I was hoping that Brett would shine under new head coach Curley Hallman. He did although he still had frustrating plays. It was a fun season with only two losses to ranked Florida State and Auburn.

The season started with a win over Stephen F. Austin. The loss to FSU. And then we just kept winning, beating Virginia Tech, East Carolina, Louisville, Tulane, Mississippi State, Southwestern Louisiana, and Memphis State before losing to Auburn. Then we beat Louisiana Tech to close the regular season at 9-2.

And then we went to the Independence Bowl and beat UTEP. I went to and enjoyed that game. James Henry had been exciting to watch all season and had 2 punt returns for touchdowns in the bowl game.

I don’t have a lot of specific memories of that season. It was a really good time to be a Southern Miss football fan. Southern Miss played in the first bowl game since the Tangerine Bowl in 1981. At the end of the season I was really excited for the 1989 season.

Getting back to writing....

I was hoping it would be a little easier to get back to writing. I am working with a physical therapist to sit up and write in the bed. It is an issue of balance for me but I will get this handled. It has been fun getting on here with you guys and posting and mixing it up with you guys again. Thanks for all the prayers and support. SMTTT
