College Basketball Recruiting Scandals or Shoe Business

In college basketball, programs normally fall into one of the following categories. Category 1 includes clean cut, follow the rules, and do not entice prospective recruits or do outlandish things when they arrive. Category 2 includes fairly clean, and do not lure prospective recruits, but once they arrive, will assist players when pressing situations may occur.

Presser Quick Notes

From Monday......

Walden:
1. Still apologizing for the loss.
2. Team has to do a better job in effort. There was a lot of plays where players didn't give max effort.
3. Way too many missed assignment
4. He feels after looking back, they could've gotten more people involved from the bench.
5. Still uncertain about Tim, but maybe be available for this weekend.
6. There were a few things Latham could have done differently to not pick up foul.
7. Coaches and players have to pay attention to detail more.
8. He is going to have to change the ways he does things as a coach.
9. DB R Mitchell is not on the team. This happened before he took over and he is not sure what happened. (I am getting to bottom of this)

Kubic:
1. Robinson and Baker looked really good and made good plays.
2. 2 Int this season and both are on tunnel screens
3. Executed great in 1st half and then it went off the rails.
4. He has to do a better job of adjustments and becoming predictable.
5. Have to be more aggressive.
6. Looking to move Fletcher back to Guard, his natural position. Hawthorne is back healthy and can play there maybe Wright.
7. Jack has to gain more confidence with receivers.
8. UNT has a good defense and switches up their fronts. Defense looks a lot like USM's.
9. They do some different things in the secondary but feel they have a good idea of what they want to do.
10. SMU did some good things on offense, does a lot of things like us, their TE really did a lot of damage to UNT D.

Percoraro:
1. Aweful tackling, not the effort he was looking for.
2. Will work on tackling this week, it will be a big emphasis
3. Losing Latham is tough, but others have to step up.
4. DL has to do better at getting off blocks and owning gaps.
5. UNT has a good offense. Both QB's are athletic and all their RB's can run the ball.
6. Going to have to stop the run to win the game.
7. Played a lot of guys on the DL last game to create depth. Todd, Cole stood out to him.
8. Should get E Kichens should be back this week.
9. Thought Sunday's practice was good and the players are embarrassed with last game and they responded good at practice.

Bandwagon for Leach.

For all of us who have complained of the bandwagoners ( Bama, LSU, AU, Clemson fans who just want to pull for a winner) over the years, this is pure gold. Love them or hate them this is one innovative and funny video. Makes fun of the bandwagoners while recruiting their own. The link to apply for State bandwagon membership is hilarious. Wish we had this level of coaching and support but that's what money will do for you.

Interesting tidbit.....

from Oxford this weekend. I was told Hop made an appearance at the KLLM Suite and had a conversation that was shared with me. I’m sure none of this will surprise you and you may already know but I’ll tell it any way. There was an abundance of trust issues within the athletic department following the Art Briles debacle. Things have never been the same relationship wise with Hop, JM and Bennett. According to Hop, he was given the Ok from both to pursue and hire Briles. When the news broke, the school caught some media backlash and RB and JM backtracked on their previous decision, hanging Hop out to dry. That was the beginning of the end. Hop apparently felt his integrity was in question so he shared all emails passed from JH, JM and RB with the local media. When Briles wasn’t hired, the uproar went away but the damage was done. He went on to say that the dept is in bad shape and there is no money. He even went as far to say that many assistants don’t get paid on time and that they have to wait for the school to get the money to pay them, sometimes it’s very late. That is very concerning to me, especially when trying to hire a new coach. Hop was not asked why he waited so long to resign if he was that miserable. He was also not asked why we were out of shape and out coached most Saturdays. He was also not asked about the depletion and development of talent on the team during his watch. Things need to get fixed and quick.

It Hurts Old-time Fans.....

....like me is seeing a team like Tulane destroy us 2 years in a row. Prior to last year, our record against them was 23-6. Now they destroy us. No football program in America has fallen harder over the last 10-15 years than USM. We've gone from respected to a joke. A team that could compete at a high level to a team that can't compete with Tulane or even in the worst Conference in college football.

Time for A Coaching Change,

  • Ok, nothing against Scotty, but he is in over his head. We need a coach that is a little older than six or seven years than the boys he is coaching. I am going to say two names that have already been brought up, some want some don't, Briles and Freeze. First Briles. The NCAA never found anything on him and never sanctioned him but they did his assistant coaches. He is coaching high school football in Texas and is doing well. If he will work for high school pay to get his foot back in the door he would take what we could pay him to get back into college coaching. He doesn't need the money, (he is a millionaire) several times over. He just wants the chance and if we give it to him he would bring us back to respectability and to a point to where we could pay him more or he would either leave. Or he just might stay because we gave him a chance. Now Freeze. If he came, we would win, and he can recruit. Unlike Briles, who would appreciate us giving him a chance, Freeze would leave for a P-5 job if it is the one he covets as soon as it is offered to him. That is okay though, because that means he has made a winner out of us and made him and us look good, and by doing so he will leave us in good shape for the next young OC to come in and make his mark for three or four years and he will move on. Hopefullly one day the wheel will stop and we will have made enough progress that we can afford to pay a coach to want to stay and we will have built up our attendance, alum and donations. Until that day, if we don't want to have to drop down a level or two, we need to take a chance on Briles or Freeze. Guys, this is the bottom of the ninth, two out, and bases are loaded and we are down by three, and if we want to stay in the game we have to take a chance. No more taking a chance on coaches that want to retire here, or they want this to be the last job of their career. It is time to roll the dice and get a winner. It doesn't matter if we are their stepping stone or not, it happens to all G-5 schools all the time. We do it to. If someone offers us a better job for more money we have to consider our family and our future. We are no different except no one is offering us millions a year to be an accountant, or chef or teacher. But remember this old saying, and it still holds true today, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! If you don't believe me just look at, EJ, JH, and how they ruined our program and we still have't recovered and we won't unless we make the right choice.
