Report Card

We’ve been in Smokie Mountains (Boone, NC) all week, so this is a distracted effort at yesterday’s results:

Coaching-C
Offense-B
Defense-F-
Special Teams-C
Overall-D
I’m being generous. Billings was in a tough spot w/out Abraham and Jones. IMO, the offense played well in spite of this challenge. The defense, on the other hand, just hasn’t demonstrated the ability to stop anyone. Giving up 500 plus yards and over 50 points to a mediocre team, just proves the old saying, “we ain’t gonna beat anyone that’s any good”. Special team play was decent; a few more touchbacks and 40 yard punts would’ve moved up their grade. We will beat Rice Saturday, because of the above quoted statement. I just can’t wait until basketball season starts. SMTTT!!!

McClain on The Eagle Hour

Scotty:
Scotty told him about AP a few days ago
He told Scotty he’d have an opportunity to interview for the SM job like everyone else
It was an awkward situation
It made sense for Scotty
AP did not contact him before talking to Scotty but said that doesn’t happen anymore

Coaching Search:
This is a critical hire
There are a lot of people who would love to have this job
Has a great list of candidates from the NFL, current FBS head coaches and coordinators
Like to make an announcement by late November, early December
Need someone with a CEO mentality who can engage the community, can build relationships and culture, has good energy, can build a foundation, build a program the right way and set us up for success
Not a requirement to be from the offensive or defensive side of the ball
Head coaching experience is helpful but not a requirement
New coach may leave after a few years if super successful, but that’s ok
We need sustained success and winning at a high level
Wants to be a top five resource program in C-USA
He’s excited today as the day he took the job

Strategic Plan:
Started on it in January, paused when covid hit, hopefully will be able to share in the spring

Basketball:
Attendance will probably be season ticket holders only
No seats on the floor

Another HC Candidate.....

This could be a time to bring Austin Davis home. He has been the the QB Coach at Seattle for a few years now. A young guy who would being a lot of energy into the mix. Also a beloved son of Southern Miss. He has been under the tutelage of a coach and system that has worked in both the College and Pro game. As a young coach he would need to make home run hires as his assistants. He has a well known name that could be used in recruiting. Word is he is very interested and would love to come back home. He also would have the ability to use his contacts in the professional and coaching ranks to help in recruiting and to put on camps. There is upside to this hire. The fact that it is well known that he wants the job and wants to be here, in my opinion, would excite the fans at this time.

This crap is getting old ....

Not telling any of you anything you don't know but, how far USM football has fallen. A couple of bad coaching hires, weak Athletic Directors, 2 straight dog bad President hires, mired in a poor conference, and no money.

As bad as Ellis Johnson's team was, the situation we are in is worse. We righted things and turn around and do the same things and find ourselves in another disaster.

Just sick.

AD for HC

I have been thinking who we can turn to for our next head coach. We need someone that is innovative like Fed but has strong ties to our program like Bower. It hit me. Austin Davis is the absolute perfect fit for what we need as head coach. He bleeds black and gold. He had a successful nfl career. Now he’s been under Pete Carroll’s Philosophy as qb coach for a couple of years. The results have been outstanding. Russel Wilson is having he’s best season ever. He’s young and hungry to prove he can be a head coach. Let’s start the AD for HC campaign.

Timeline is starting to take shape.....

Jeremy did the article with Patty and mentioned he has money for a HC, he did that cause he and Scotty must have already discussed this. I am not sure if he mentioned Scotty but dont think he did. (This is all my thoughts. Nothing official.) Scotty had to make this move now because of timing and Austin Peay needs a coach now. The players probably feel hurt and that is understandable. In any other year, this happens after the season. Just my 2 cents.....

Scotty Walden hired as head football coach at Austin Peay...

Eagles add new commitment for 2021/recruiting tidbits.....

Here are some issues:

The first signing day is Dec 16-18 2020 but word is the NCAA is moving that back to Feb 5th 2021 which is good for USM. Gives new coaches time to come in and recruit their first time in.

No kids can visit campus and no coaches can visit kids, and the NCAA hasn't said when that will be lifted.

Eagles will have scholarships to give due to players leaving, tranfering, quitting, etc... Until the season is over and they k ow who is coming back and who isn't, those numbers are up in the air. Also will the school have money for extra schollys due to new NCAA eligibility rules and players returning.

New coach may come in and go a different way. He may keep all, some, or none of the commits.

Recruiting won't pick up until after the season or either a new coach is named.

This may be the most insane recruiting period ever. Stay tuned!!!
