Basketball to Date

I believe we will end the regular season play hopefully at 13 and 12, and it will be good to have a winning season. That is assuming we drastically cut down on turnovers. We are very slowly improving in the other parts of the game, but we are not close to becoming a good team. I had hoped we would be very much improved by the start of conference play, but we have not.

I had hope for a while in pre-season that we would be somewhere around the conference's top when seeing the new players coming in the house. As a matter of fact, the best player on the team was one that played last year. I only hope for a good recruiting year. One great player can be the difference.

The Sun is Shining bright for 2021 Football.

The departure of Hemby and Thomas will not rain on our parade. The arrival of Stanley and Daniel ( 3* players) will certainly make up for the loss. Turner and Boothe may be back with a host of defensive players that are seasoned. The QB position appears to be a dream come true, and it is the most important. A good new punter. Wide receivers should prove to be an awesome group. RBs are led by one of the best freshmen in the country. The new transfers and recruits at fantastic. The coach may be the best hire we have ever made. Anyone else want to add another bright spot?

UAB has scorers, got to play strong defenses
Back to back games is mental and you have to rest your body
As long as we are mentally locked in we can sweep the team.
Haven't played back to back since AAU days
We have to eliminate turnovers
Energy was the difference in 1st UTEP game

I like to set the tone on defense. It starts in practice and carries over to the game.
I am more of an energy guy, it helps me defend and rebound.
I pattern my game after Dennis Rodman, not a big guy but rebounds and plays tough defense.

UAB is a good team they have a net ranking in the 50's and they have done a good job of bringing in transfers.
They are a disruptive team. They want to score 80 or 90 points and want to create chaos. They are very detailed on offense.
You can't beat a team with you have a -15 turnover margin. We have got to be better and also take better and more shots.
The teams that will be able to get 2 wins in a row. It is so hard to win 2 in a row, especially playing back to back nights. I don't think teams will have a 14-4 conference record this year.
As we get deeper into the season, legs are going to be important and resting for the stretch run. We got about 12 guys who can play.

Southern Miss is known in Tennessee...

I wore some Southern Miss apparel while on my trip. It was nice to see so many people knew who Southern Miss was and the legacy it has. While waiting in lines and talking people would ask if I was from Hattiesburg or Southern Miss and they would always say how much they respected the university or how much they actually liked USM. USM does have a national brand and is well respected. Also got asked why USM never plays Ole Miss or State in football at least 10 times, lol. A few people wanted to talk about baseball.

2021 Brings New Enthusiasm For Southern Miss Atheltics

January is always exciting time for Southern Miss fans. The cracking of bats and the sound of a baseball being caught in the pocket of a glove brings about an excitement most schools have when Fall football practice starts across the country. This January is different. There is a renewed excitement for Golden Eagle Basketball. There is extreme optimism about the direction new Golden Eagle Football HC Will Hall is taking the program. There is always passion about baseball, the bell cow of USM Athletics. So, why such optimism? Where is the evidence for the optimism? Let's take a look at the Big 3 sports on campus and find out.

Just for fun

Who is your choice for your all-time favorite USM football player? And Why? It does not necessarily have to be the best (like Bret, Reggie, or Ray) but just one that was special to you.

My choice is Larry Moulton. He played around 1968 and was only around 5' 11" and 175 lbs but he was the hardest runner and had more heart than any I remember. In a game against Bama, he carried about 4 players for about 8 yards. He played with a lot of spirit.
