Thoughts About Baseball Doubleheader

Eagles had much better at bats in first game.
Stanley was great.
Except for Best, the pitching staff was really good. Might look at Ethridge to start midweek games.
In 2nd game, batters were looking for calls and not being aggressive. 2 hits prove that. Can't wait for the ump to walk you, even though his zone is bad.
1st 2 games of the season. Will be important to see how team responds.
Wilks is really good.
Dickerson is a solid ball player who is smooth defensively but has a terrible hairdo.

OT- The Jackson element has hit Prime Time again

Seriously, Jackson crooks cannot get out of their own stereotypical ways.

This time, the crook had access to Coach Sanders personal office.

C’mon Man!

Supporting Information for Pitcher of the Week Nominee: In his first career start, after 37 career relief appearances, Stanley allowed just one hit and no runs over six innings of work and fanned 13 while walking one. The strikeout total was a career-high and also marked the most punch outs on opening day in the Scott Berry era (since 2010). It also was the most strikeouts since Nick Sandlin posted 13 against Rice on March 30, 2018. Stanley whiffed the first five batters he faced registered three strikeouts in an inning three times. He allowed just two base runners – a second-inning double and a four-inning walk. Also fanned six of his final seven batters in his outing.

Team Notes

* The Golden Eagles opened the season by winning their last seven openers and are 46-28-1 since 1947.

* In the three-game series, Southern Miss’ pitching staff fanned 45 and walked just four batters. In the second game of the doubleheader, Southern Miss tied a school record as its staff combined for 19 strikeouts, tying a mark that was originally set against Loyola (N.O.) in 1948.
* Both Ben Ethridge and Drew Boyd each set career marks for strikeouts over the weekend with 12 and 9, respectively.
* Freshman Reed Trimble hit a pair of two-run homers and tied his career-high for RBI with six in the series finale with the Demons. It was the first two-homer game since Matt Guidry did it against Valparaiso (2/29/20).
* With two wins in the opening series, 12th year coach Scott Berry got closer to the 400-win mark at Southern Miss as he now has 397 for his tenure as the Golden Eagle skipper.

I have great news about Spring Practice for you all...

This just in from Southern Miss FB:

Southern Miss Football 2021 Spring Practice General Public and Media Policies:

Practices are open to both the general public and media when pracce is held inside M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Media and fans are instructed to enter the gate on the north side of the stadium and head to the west stadium
(press box side) where they can watch practice from the stands.

I am going to try and make as many practices as I possibly can. Going to be a busy month, but hey that is the fun part of this job....

A few thoughts from MBB wim last night...

1. Tae Hardy had 2 sloppy plays to start the 2nd half and that seemed to wake him up. He played like the player we were told he could be.
2. The Eagles got out on fast breaks and ran the whole game. It was nice to see that.
3. FIU is a bad team.
4. Trading 2 for 3 worked last night when the other team goes cold. Problem is most teams never cool off against USM.
5. Draine made a few 3's and that opened up the lane. Eagles also made some nice interior passes off that.
6. Defense was great in last 10 min of the game.
7. They have to win today or no hope of making tournamemt.tournament.
8. It is a shame they decided to go to division play before the season started. The Eagles would make the CUSA Tournament if it were normal. Eagles always seem to suffer from changes like this.

If you could pick one of these JC basketball players for Southern Miss which one would you select?

There are 7 on the list. All of them are eligible to transfer to 4-year schools. If you could pick one and only one which one would you select? My pick is Lamar Wilkerson of Three Rivers Community College.
