Conference USA Men’s Basketball Tournament Ten Tips

Overall History

Since the inception of Conference USA (CUSA) in 1995-96, this will be the 25th tournament champion (since the last year’s 2020 tournament was canceled). Last year, the initial tourney day was completed, with Florida Atlantic, FIU, UAB, and Marshall winning and advancing to play the following day before the tournament was canceled. In the first tourney in 1996, Cincinnati claimed the inaugural tourney championship at The Pyramid in Memphis. Lots of shuffling in conference members throughout conference history.

Supporting Information for Hitter of the Week Nominee: Reed Trimble led the Golden Eagles to a 2-2 week, finishing the four-game week with a three-game hitting streak and a pair of multi-hit games. He drove in four runs in a 6-0 shutout of Jacksonville State on Saturday – including a RBI bunt single and a 3-run homer - and then added a solo shot on Sunday in a 3-1 triumph to give him a team-best four homers this year. His three-hit game was his first of the season as he tied his career high for hits in a game (Troy – 3/10/20). His three-game hitting streak ties his 2021 best. He also started three games in centerfield and once at second base fielding all 11 chances successfully (7 putouts and 4 assists). He now has six 2-out RBI this season, which ties for the best on the team, while three of his four home runs have been three-run blasts.

Supporting Information for Pitcher of the Week Nominee: Walker Powell registered a seven-inning shutout performance in only his second start of the season in a 6-0 victory Saturday against Jacksonville State. He stranded six base runners as he allowed five singles and three walks. Powell only allowed two Gamecocks to reach second base in his outing. He ended five of his innings with strikeouts and another with a double play. The preseason All-Conference USA pick. Powell was part of the Golden Eagles second shutout of the year.

Team Notes

* In the 6-0 victory Saturday, March 6, Golden Eagle head coach Scott Berry registered his 400th victory at the school becoming only the third Southern Miss coach to reach that win plateau. The others were Hill Denson (1984-97 – 468 wins) and Corky Palmer (1998-2009 – 458 wins). Berry reached 400 wins quicker than the other two by getting there in 622 games. Palmer did it in 644 and Denson in 732.

* The Golden Eagle pitching staff continues to put up strikeouts during the early portion of the season with a total of 128 with only 26 walks. Southern Miss hurlers have registered double-digit strikeouts in 8 of 11 games this season, while also posting nine in two of those contests.
* Southern Miss enjoyed double-digit hits in each of its last two games, tying a season-high with 10 in both the Saturday and Sunday contest.

* Closer Garrett Ramsey made his only appearance of the week in Sunday’s game and retired the first two batters of the ninth to extend his streak of reitring the first 10 batters he faced this season. After following that by allowing two base runners via a walk and a single, he collected his second strikeout of the outing to record his third save in as many appearances this spring.

* Southern Miss has 12 home runs through the first 11 games this season as Reed Trimble leads the way with four. Southern Miss posted just 10 in the 16-game abbreviated schedule in 2020.

* Hunter Stanley whiffed nine and walked one in his start Friday night to give him 31 strikeouts and two walks in three starts this season. That equates to a 15.5-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He was leading the country last week when he was at 22-1.

* For the first time this season, the Golden Eagles will not play a midweek contest and return home to face Louisiana-Lafayette next weekend at Pete Taylor Park. That starts a stretch for the Golden Eagles of playing 10 of the next 12 games at home.

Maybe 500

Ok, I am going to piss off a lot of people but hear it goes. I am 61 years old and have been involved in baseball for 55 of those years either as a player, coach or father of a player. This team will do good to finish 500 this season. I honestly believe the coaching staff has missed on most of the position players. I don’t care how well you pitch it you have to score at least one run to win a ball game. I am not going to call anyone by name but the hype on some of the players is way off. I hope this team proves me wrong as the season goes on. If they do I will gladly apologize for this post. I will continue to fill my seat at The Pete and pay my CUSA subscription to watch the games I can’t attend. That’s my take.

We lose the first of 3 with Jacksonville State 6>>>>>>>>>0. Here's what you do...

Here's what you do.
1. Get an industrial mop handle and "customize" it to the length of a bat. (Get a few, the rocks chew them up.)
2. Get a pile rocks.
3. Wear your batting gloves to prevent blisters. Be careful not to pull muscles.
4. Toss up rocks, and hit them with the rock bat. This will likely be difficult for you at first, but DON'T GIVE UP. Keep swinging until you can do it. It will come.

When you get to where you can hit 8-9 out of 10 rocks, your hitting problems will disappear. 10 of 10 will be incredible. ***You will have trained your eyes to watch the ball.*** It's really that simple, and it's really that important. You will murder a baseball whether at 75 or 95 mph, and it's like riding a bicycle, you never forget. When you get into a slump, it's back to the rock pile. The more you hit the rocks your ability to hit a baseball just gets better and better.

I can hear the laughter at such an archaic idea, especially with pitching machines and coaches, but I promise, it works!!! So, the choice is yours. Be a rock batter, or be middle of the pack.

Rock Batters for the WIN!!!

GO EAGLES!!!

Coach Hall statement from presser

This stood out to me. "7-5 is not the standard anymore, that will not get it done."

He realizes that the fan base is tired of 7-5 mediocrity. For him to make this statement, he is putting himself out there and that he expects the fans to hold him to that standard. No excuses, just get the job done. Also, his energy is infectious. Speaking to players after practice before, they were tired and not really open to answering a bunch of questions. Now it is totally different. The guys are excited and are happy to to about practice and what is going on.

He has changed the attitude in the program. The next change is culture and that will come with wins.

Baseball weekend preview: Jacksonville State

After a forgettable night in Pearl, much of the momentum gained from the UConn series win seems to be lost somewhere behind Bass Pros Shop. The Eagles head east (and a little bit south) to face the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in a 3-game set. This is not the name opponent Southern Miss was originally scheduled to face this weekend, but the Golden Eagles have no room to take anyone for granted right now.
