With the people talking about ways to make money! I have always liked a small tax added to food purchases. It does not have to be a huge tax but one that would not be noticed by anyone. I always hated the fact that the last time this was voted on it did not pass. It would have gone to USM to support the school and make for a stronger athletic program. It would also look better to other conferences when it is time for realignment. USM would at lest be solvent.

Should be a tax on food and hotels. Money to be used to upgrade Reed Green, build indoor practice facility (for baseball, softball and football), basketball practice facility, and upgrades too The Rock, or to purchase land to eventually build a more state of the art stadium.

I'm not sure if you realize there's already a 2% local and private tax at Hattiesburg motels, hotels, and restaurants. I have no idea how much it adds in tax revenue on an annual basis. It is used to operate the convention center and visitor's bureau, which I assume operates at a substantial loss annually.

Anybody know the $$$ amounts?

Last time, we tried adding one more penny to hotels and restaurants, making it 10 cents on the dollar. The convention center tax was supposed to expire, but then again, that's what they said about the toll bridges in Florida when they put those up...in the 60's.

There is a big difference in "one more penny" and a 1% additional tax. Aside from that, I was wondering if anyone on the message board knows how many millions of dollars the current 2% local tax already brings into the City of Hattiesburg on an annual basis. I don't have that information.
