Southern Miss returned to the practice field today for the first time since Saturday's scrimmage. It was a spirited even with a number of high school players in attendance, including the entire Sumrall football team.

Here's a few notes of interest:

- Transfer defensive back Devonta Foster is a ball-hawk. He picked off two passes today one of which would have gone for a pick-six. He's really making a case for the starting position at strong safety. Picasso Nelson is also making a strong case for the starting nod at free-safety. We have a quick hits video coming up with Nelson.

- Great competition today between the 1st team OL and DL. Both units have work to do but are making strides. Not currently a 1st stringer but I continue to be impressed with big Drew Peterson.

- Mike Thomas continues to stand on at WR and it's not easy because DJ Thompson is looking good as well as Kyle Foster and Casey Martin. We also have quick hits with Martin that we recorded after practice today. I can't leave out rFr Korey Robertson who made a great TD catch on a free play in the back of the endzone.

- Taylor Marini continues to show flashes at the TE position. Tez Parks was back in full contact today and looked to be feeling no worse for wear, he made some really nice plays today.

- Sophomore DE Xavier Thigpen also had a nice day today making plays.
