So was it a fumble?

The Texas State coach claims that an inadvertent whistle cost them the fumble recovery. As I understand the rule once the forward progress of the running back is stopped and the players are stacked up the play is called dead by rule. It looked to me that the play was dead and then a Texas State player pulled the ball loose. Of course all I have to go by is the video replay on the computer screen. Perhaps someone who was at the game saw it from a different angle and has a different opinion.
