Southern Miss Goes Through Second Fall Scrimmage on Saturday Night

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team utilized its second scrimmage of fall practice here Saturday night at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

Behind the play of junior quarterbacks Nick Mullens and Tyler Matthews, the duo combined for four touchdowns and three interceptions.

Mullens tossed a 21-yard scoring strike to Mike Thomas to go along with one pick. As for Matthews, he tallied a three-yard touchdown to redshirt junior Shawn Brickley during a goal-line situation, while also connecting with redshirt freshman Korey Robertson for touchdown passes of 27 and 9 yards to along with two interceptions.

Robertson led the Golden Eagle receivers with six catches for 63 yards, while freshman Jordan Mitchell caught four passes for 86 yards. Redshirt sophomore Ben Olinger collected five grabs for 28 yards and Thomas added two catches for 27 yards.

On the ground, sophomore Ito Smith registered just three carries but two were for touchdowns during goal-line situations from 3 and 8 yards out. Redshirt freshman Delaunte’ Thornton recorded a scrimmage-best 19 carries for 67 yards and a two-yard touchdown, while freshman Patrick Brooks put together 69 rushing yards on 12 touches to go along with two touchdowns of 1 and 2 yards. Senior Jalen Richard saw just two rushes but broke a run for 23 yards the on his first carry early in the scrimmage.

Defensively, redshirt sophomore Naim Mustafaa, freshman Ernest Gunn, redshirt freshman Xavier Marion and redshirt freshman Walden Davis each recorded interceptions. Davis notched a long return before being rundown by Thornton after a long return.
