I was looking forward to Southern Miss football in 1988. I was hoping that Brett would shine under new head coach Curley Hallman. He did although he still had frustrating plays. It was a fun season with only two losses to ranked Florida State and Auburn.

The season started with a win over Stephen F. Austin. The loss to FSU. And then we just kept winning, beating Virginia Tech, East Carolina, Louisville, Tulane, Mississippi State, Southwestern Louisiana, and Memphis State before losing to Auburn. Then we beat Louisiana Tech to close the regular season at 9-2.

And then we went to the Independence Bowl and beat UTEP. I went to and enjoyed that game. James Henry had been exciting to watch all season and had 2 punt returns for touchdowns in the bowl game.

I don’t have a lot of specific memories of that season. It was a really good time to be a Southern Miss football fan. Southern Miss played in the first bowl game since the Tangerine Bowl in 1981. At the end of the season I was really excited for the 1989 season.
