Southern Miss passes another stiff test … Christian Ostrander’s club is beginning to look like one that will contend for a regional host, and perhaps even more, by season’s end. The Golden Eagles already caught our attention a couple of weeks ago with a midweek win over Mississippi State and a home series win over Louisiana Tech. Now, USM has a massive feather in its cap after going on the road and taking two of three from TCU. Kros Sivley set the tone in USM’s first win of the weekend by allowing just one run on five hits in seven innings, while everything came together in a dominant 11-3 win in the series finale. Matthew Russo had a monster Sunday afternoon at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, two homers and a whopping five RBIs. Carson Paetow, who also had a solid weekend, chipped in a two-hit performance. Both USM and fellow Sun Belt foe Troy are off to strong starts. Unfortunately, the two stout clubs do not play until the final weekend of the regular season.
