Who will it be?????

According to Florida guy i know... Nuss is not our guy

I just finished talking with a buddy of mine who works within the Gators program and he thinks its very slim that we hire Nuss. These were his exact words to me when I asked him about Nuss... "Very good X's and O's guy but I'm told he won't be the guy unless the ole miss guy turns it down". Of course my response was what Ole Miss guy?? And he said Matt Luke. He then went on to say that "Nuss wouldn't do good recruiting there (USM) but would be great scheme wise and that he's a good coach and great with schemes". He couldn't talk long because he was actually with Nuss right now in Theodore, AL recruiting. But who knows, at the end of the day he may very well be our coach. I sure hope he's not cause even my buddy who works on the recruiting trail for the Gators sounded like he didn't have much faith in him.

Eddie Gran

Anything can happen and I imagine there are more folks trying to get their name in the hat or the So Miss job than can actually get considered in a short period of time.

My sources tell me that to this point the Southern Miss and Eddie Gran interest has been solely on Gran's part.

Not to say he would not be a legit candidate, just that the timing looks to be bad or Eddie this go around.

Let's say it is NUSS....

I that it is going to be annonced by the end of the day....alot of smoke and chater as Lanny said in a different thread, and people usually" in the know" defending him in other threads. Can someone obviously more intelligent than myself explain to me why him? None of us were in the interview so we have to go off what is on paper.
Why him over people that we strongly believe were interested in the job. Why over jhop, Duggan, or anyone else that has been seriously mentioned. He and Gene Chizik seemed the worst fits for our program. Someone help me understand.

Let's calm down and think about Bill McGillis' dilemma

This is probably more than you wanted to hear but I wanted to to submit it for your consideration.

I taught research and statistics, and there are some concepts we used that may be useful here.

Bill McGillis must select a new head coach -- - a decision that will make a very big difference for Southern Miss in the future. He is on the horns of a dilemma. He cannot afford make a type I error (a false positive), that is selecting a head football coach who is, to horribly understate it, not the one we want (e.g., EJ ); or a type II error, (a false negative) failing to select the head coach we really need.

That's why he has to interview all the viable candidates in the time he has, then make a decision.

  • For that reason I do not expect to see the announcement before Saturday. Just my opinion.

Let this sinking while we wait for our new coach...

Not very long ago an SEC doormat hired a guy that 8 years prior to him being named the head man was coaching an Academy football and girls basketball team in Memphis, TN. Yes the fan base was floored by the hiring of Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss. Nobody understood what had just happened or why. Today Coach Freeze is one of the most successful and highest paid FB coaches in the SEC. Who would've ever thought this would ever happen? I'm guessing about 2% of the Ole Miss fan base.
You never really know what your getting in a head football coach especially ones that have never been a HC. It's a crap shoot with the hiring of coordinators to HC. Only time will tell if BM makes the right choice. I for one would not want to make this decision. It's gotta be a tough one to make. I'm going to back whoever he hires because I'm a USM guy and just hope that whomever it is has an understanding of what Southern Miss football is all about and why we are who we are! That to me is important maybe not as much as x's and o's but it is vital to understand who we are at USM.

Southern Miss Coaching Search - Trending

We are now more than 72 hours into the Southern Miss football coaching search and the hours are beginning to feel like days. In a world with an 24/7 constant news cycle we have almost no time to pause, reboot and and digest information.

Thats why a three day coaching search now feels like it is taking forever, even though the first interview of the process was conducted less than 48 hours ago.

Continuity And Sustainment

Apparently Nuss is a good coach
and currently getting a lot of attention.
Also as "Iron" put it, the Spread has been a portion of his multiple offenses.

HOWEVER; at a point when we have finally gotten our program back on the winning track; the Majority of us (having read your posts/comments) are really concerned about a HC selection that will provide Both "continuity" and "sustainment".

I don't only want to win this year and move up in the rankings, I want to win every year and "stay" in the rankings (hard for some of us to remember, huh!)!

Nuss has coached for 9 "different" Teams in his 14 years of career coaching! Also a Huge point is, He has had basically an unlimited budget for the last 4 Teams (Washington, Alabama, Michigan, Florida) where he coached!

For continuity, will he try to keep most of our current hardworking, successful staff and current players that are ready to win again for us this year or make wholesale changes to something that ain't broke but only getting better?
Bum Philips once said "You need to dance with the one that brung you!"

For sustainment, will he be dedicated enough to the USM cause (as about 2 or 3 other potential HC candidates would be) to work for "at least a few years" within our budget (which I feel though constrained is getting better) to put USM on top where we can "stay" on top!
Remember, even Fedora and Monken were with us for "3" years!

After this year's successful season (that we are going to have), no Contract Buyout will be a deterrent to those other big schools making a move on our "successful" HC! Do we recommend a house for our new HC or a parking space for a Winnebago???

This may have already been discussed, but my biggest concern re taking an SEC coordinator ...

is that the money and facilities in the SEC (and Big 10 for that matter) are SO beyond reality that I feel like these coaches are used to a different world. And so when they are hit with the blue collar realities of what it takes to be a head coach at Southern Miss it is culture shock for them and they can't and won't be able to adjust to the, frankly, extra work and extra hours that go into succeeded here ALL WHILE doing it on a pennies compared to what they are used to having access to.

It takes a very special mentality, toughness and work ethic to succeed here. You have to be not only highly intelligent, driven and wildly creative. You have to have an almost crazy streak in you to make it work.

I question SEC princes when it comes to ability to do this.

Just my opinion and concern.

What qualities are most important

Seems to me the qualities we are looking for fall into several definable areas:
1. Offensive/Defensive philosophy
2. Staff management (ability to attract and retain quality asst coaches)
3. Recruiting.
4. Program Building i.e. Face of the program, inspire donors, project success.
5. Media relations.

I believe 2,3 & 4 are more important here than in large, well funded programs since they have much larger support staffs to handle these functions. I think #4 is very important to our program and I am not sure Dave Duggan has the dynamic personality required for this. I am not opposed to him but I just don't believe this to be a strength of his. I read an article on Nussmeier last night that described him as a fiery personality with a very demanding coaching style but is very popular with players.

I am the only one that would like to hear something

from BM, even if it is just one of his famous videos or a email letting us know what is going on. Just a little tweet saying that the process is playing itself out and be patient. We are going to go through the process and we are still on schedule for having a neew coach by the weekend. Even if it is a lie I would feel better. Starting to remind me of the Doc debacle.

IF It's Nussmeier and He Keeps Woz and Others...

Then I am all in on this hire. If he comes in and keeps Woz and some other assistants, it will show that he understands the value of continuity and loyalty at a program like Southern Miss. If he cleans house and brings his own guys in, I will be very concerned that he's going to have the "I know better than little ole Southern Miss and I'm gonna do it my way" attitude like EJ did. Guess time will tell.

Whoever the new cosch is .....

Some will be happy , some will be sad .
Some will will call it an Ellis hire and others
Will be excited .

, I don't think the book has been written on what Kind of hire Doc is.,,was or will be . I do know he got the worst reception of a new head coach ever to Southernmiss. (This thread is not about a Doc , plenty of time to bash him later)

Who ever gets the Job, Get behind the Guy, his results will be available to critique soon enough. The train moves better if everybody is pushing in the same direction . If Our AD hires the guy . He is our new coach . He wants to be at SoutherMiss . That is good enough for me.
