It's been a slow Friday morning here at the office, so I've had the opportunity to reach out to a few folks to inquire about what they're hearing. The sources are good, but I can only offer the information as third-hand and can't verify or substantiate it to any higher degree than that. I haven't been able to talk to Lanny yet, so he can compare notes with the below to see if this matches what he's picking up:
In summary:
- The search has been as active as it seems and several candidates have been interviewed, including a few that have not been widely mentioned in the press.
- Power 5 coordinators seem to be getting more favorable looks than lower-level HCs who have been interviewed.
- There have been some names mentioned that have not been seriously considered. I believe Chizik is one of these.
- Nuss is definitely a leading candidate and there is a belief that his fiery, ultra-competitive character and coaching style is very appealing to an athletic director who is looking to maintain a high energy-level in the football program.
- Nuss had what was described as a "very strong interview" that demonstrated "a clear understanding of the needs of a program like Southern Miss". I found that interesting, considering that he's spent most of his time at programs on the opposite end of the spectrum.
- Hopson has some loyal advocates among the active donor and booster base and is said to be "a very serious candidate".
- I am adding some of my own conjecture here, but it is my belief that Lindsey did not "turn us down" and instead realized that he was unlikely to be hired for the job given some of the higher-profiles OCs interviewing for the job. With no time under his belt at ASU, he needed to make a quick show of loyalty when he realized he wouldn't be the guy.
- There's a high probability that a coach will be announced tomorrow.
- Based on the info, I do not believe Duggan will be hired as HC. If Duggan is the pick, it was described to me as being "shocking if true at this point".
