Louisiana Tech just beat Rice in baseball which I think is a good thing...

The Southern Miss baseball team did not make things any easier for themselves this weekend but due to the Louisiana Tech win over Rice this Saturday afternoon Southern Miss will be the #3 seed in the CUSA tournament. Marshall will be the #2 seed, ODU will be the #6 seed, and FIU will be the #7 seed. There is a chance for a revenge game vs FIU in this tournament which I like.

Pressure defines a Leader

In every situation in life there comes times of achieving goals that are attainable and you only have X number of times to achieve those goals. This being said you have got to have and I mean must have leadership at the top of any organization or team to be able to elevate the mental and physical abilities of your organization or team to perform. In every single sport at our beloved University we do not have that leadership ability, we have seen it in football with the UAB debacle several years back, we have seen it in basketball with the BYU debacle at the Greenhouse, and more than any sport we have seen it with baseball over and over and over again. Of all the sports mentioned baseball is the one sport that goals can be attained on a more frequent basis because we are not as far behind in facilities and talent, however if you don't have motivators and the right leaders at the top then you always and I mean always slide right back to the middle of the pack as being average. Leadership and Coaches define poor, average and good we are and have been for years average. We as fans think in some of these years that our teams are actually good and we are when there is no pressure and the spotlight is not directly on us but when the SPOTLIGHT is directly on us that's when Coaching abilities really are seen and that is our achilles heal we don't have that type of leadership. There is no doubt in my mind Scott Berry is a likeable and good person and I think he is one hell of a good Assistant Coach but he has proven he can't motivate in pressure situations over and over again. He has had years of extreme talent and can't garner chemistry on the team, he has had years of great pitching and can't motivate the team to hit for a decent average, he has had years of good hitters and can't motivate a pitching staff to not hit and walk batters. Most naysayers say he can't make the players perform that it's not his fault I say hogwash it is on him. When you constantly have a lineup that is never tweaked unless of an injury and you never let a player that is in a slump sit a few games that is on you Scott Berry and when you keep putting a pitcher in and letting him stay 2 or 3 or 4 batters too long that is on you Scott Berry and when you keep playing a player that is a senior that is struggling in the field and at the plate rather than an underclassman that is on you Scott Berry and finally when you can't at crunch time when the SPOTLIGHT is on playing a under 500 team have a sitdown with your team and motivate a better performance than what was witnessed at FIU that DIRECTLY is on you Scott Berry.

I have written my annual SB email to BM

Politely reminding him that this happens every year.
There appears to be no such thing as a good ending in a SB script.
We replaced a decent fielding but bad hitting second baseman with a weak fielding but bad hitting second baseman. And on and on.
Will be there to support next week.
Not quiting on the team but certainly not expecting much and a 0-2 turny and same in a regional if we go will not be surprising.
Would love to eat my words.

Guys no way around this one... this loss hurts more than

when we beat Ole Miss and did not show up for UAB. This is why it is so hard to be a Southern Miss fan and commend all those that stay die are like me. In ALL of our sports, when that BIG moment comes, we have become surprised when we actually finish the deal because it happens far and few in between.

I was hoping this year's baseball team would break the mode, but so much for that. Unlike football and basketball, I am hard on baseball because we have the talent.. We just dont play "consistently" with a sense of urgency.

Not a baseball guy.

But...

I don't have confidence in Berry's approach.
FIU, when they have runners on base, gets aggressive.
We, on the other hand, well... I'm not real sure what we do.
We foul a lot of pitches off. We swing at a lot of ball 4's, and miss, according to JC.
Do we ever attempt a safety squeeze? Is that even the right terminology? You know, try to bunt the man at 3rd home?
Swear to God, I'd tell Chuckie not to swing at anything when the bases are loaded. Just strike out looking. 50% better return, guaranteed.

If team morale, hustle, fight, etc., are as bad as you guys are saying... well, that's coaching.
And if it's coaching, does winning a regional actually help us in the long run?
Maybe it's not coaching. Maybe we have a team of selfish players. Maybe they're hard to motivate.
But every year?

Like I said, I'm not a baseball guy.
