D1 Baseball Week 4 Top 5 Series to Watch: Southern Miss at La Tech

Louisiana Tech

Southern Miss at Louisiana Tech

Once heated Conference USA rivals, the Golden Eagles (8-5) and Bulldogs (12-1) will reunite in Ruston, Louisiana, for what might be the weekend’s most even series.

Coming off a 28-31 campaign in 2023, Louisiana Tech won its first 12 games before falling to Xavier on Wednesday. Although a bounce-back season seemed to be in the cards for the Bulldogs – who made back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2021 and 2022 – their start has exceeded expectations. As good as their senior-laden lineup has been (.310/.421/.482), they’ve been especially impressive on the mound, ranking fourth nationally in ERA (2.48) and eighth in WHIP (1.08). Ethan Bates has been in the middle of all the action, hitting .370/.453/.630 with 17 RBIs and notching three saves.

As usual, Southern Miss’ pitching has also been sharp, posting a 4.04 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP to go along with 28.4% strikeout and 8% walk rates. Niko Mazza (2-0, 1.96 ERA, 33.3 K%, 1.4 BB%) has shined in his move to the Friday role, and JB Middleton (0-0. 0.00, 43.3 K%, 3.3 BB%) has been almost unhittable out of the bullpen. The Golden Eagles are still looking for more offense, though, as they’re hitting .234/.385/.365.

Dominant win for the Lady Eagles over Coastal Carolina

The ladies sent them back to Conway with a beating. 4 players in double figures, Bravey with a double-double, and perhaps the best played game of the season, other than Ole Miss. Dom is back 100% and they will be a tough out. Blatchford, Freshman, was really good on defense with many hustle plays that don't show up in stats.

Next up JMU and their star player is dealing with an injury. Anything can happen in the tournament.

Early baseball tournaments

What is ya’lls opinion on these early tournaments that a lot of teams are now playing in? Would this be something you think Coach Os would like especially if we had a more experienced team? I’d love to see maybe one of these in Biloxi where we played Nicholls and the C-USA tourney was hosted.

On the other hand I wouldn’t to give up any home games in the great atmosphere at the Pete.

D1 Baseball: Rogers wrap on Week 3

Last season was clearly an aberration for Louisiana Tech … Lane Burroughs historically always has the Bulldogs ready to roll. But despite having a solid overall personnel set, Tech finished last season with a losing record. Well, that season is clearly looking like a total aberration at this point, as La. Tech is off to an impressive 11-0 start after cruising through the Battle at the Ballpark this past weekend. Up next is Southern Miss. Luke Nichols has done a terrific job in the weekend rotation with 15 strikeouts and just two walks in 16 innings of work, while Ethan Bates has been terrific both on the mound and at the plate. At the plate, he sits second on the team with a .349 average to go with six doubles, two homers and 14 RBIs. That weekend series against the Golden Eagles will tell us a lot about both teams.

Most of the Sun Belt is looking very strong … We talked at length during the offseason about how much we thought realignment would benefit a league like the Sun Belt. Well, you’re starting to see the league reaping those benefits so far this spring. We had the Sun Belt as a three-bid league coming into the season, but I think I’d be surprised with the league not at least getting four bids. Coastal Carolina, Southern Miss and Texas State look like safe bets right now, while Troy should be just fine despite a series loss to Northwestern State this past weekend. That isn’t even considering a team like James Madison, which is 8-3 and gave Arkansas all it could handle a couple of weeks ago. Furthermore, Old Dominion is off to a sizzling hot start, Louisiana should figure things out and South Alabama is amid a big turnaround. Conference play will be an absolute war, and I love it.
