Monday Presser Quick Hits.....

Walden (is actually back)

Got back this AM and met with the staff
Very disappointing in outcome of the game
Very proud of resiliency and effort in the game and come back like they did in 2nd half
Now that they are playing hard, there is still no excuses in mental errors
Giving uo way too many explosive plays.
When defense is giving up points offense has to score, both sides must play complimentary football.
Tate played his heart out, very proud of him.
Special teams were very good.
When the offense and defense is clicking this team is very good.
Willis the LU QB is extremely good.
He would zoom into team and staff meetings, which kept him in the loop during last week.
Sit back watching the game on TV, he was able to see the game completely different.
Tate's status is still up in the air. He is a tough kid.
Hoping to have Jack back this week.
Not much film on Rice, but there is not much turnover on their staff. They have a good defensive plan and will be a challenge.
All options are on the table on the OL. What they will do on the OL will be decided this week. Will Trace be back? Will Scott continue to play Guard, etc...
They feel like they are getting a handle on this Covid situation. They are turning the curve and maybe on the back end of this.
He feels the running game was going in the right direction. They want to be known as a vertical offense and the running game is doing that. They have really simplified the running game and that has helped.
Rice played extremely hard and are a much improved football team.
Any team in CUSA can beat anyone.
Brownlee is a hard worker and wants to be the best and wants to get better.
He can't really talk recruiting, but excited to see kids in the area excited to stay with Southern Miss.

Kubik:

He thought the OL did an extremely good job.
He thought G Scott played well at Guard and will get more reps.
Over the last few weeks they are really running 3 or 4 schemes and that has really helped the running game.
He has been nothing but impressed with Tate this whole season. He throws the ball extremely well. He prepares hard and is tough. He had a couple forced throws, but played really good.
Gore Jr is one of the most mature and smartest Freshman he has ever seen.
Trey Lowe 111 is the backup QB right now. He had a really good week of practice.

Pecoraro:

Eagles gave up too many explosive plays and missed too many tackles.
Supposedly they did not have a camera view to review the spot on 4th down in the 1st half. (ESPN 3)
Eagles must tackle better.
Brooks has played every singe position in the defensive backfield, problem is he can't get comfortable at one position and he probably is their best DB.
Not much film on rice, they have to adjust, look to past film, but this is 2020.

Latham:

The sack at the start of 2nd half really got the team going, be believes.
Rice is similar to last season and wants to run the ball.
He feels the trainers are doing a great job dealing with Covid.
Not having Coach Walden on the sideline was different because he brings energy.

Brownlee:

He woke up and find out he was on "you got Mossed" on ESPN. Big honor for Moss to recognize him.
Nothing much has changed at WR since Walden took over as HC.
He missed Walden's energy on the sideline and so did the team. They love Walden.
He felt he had to step up once Tim Jones went down due to energy.

Indiana won football game vs Penn State by letting Penn State score late in the game...

This was a high-risk strategy but it worked. All Penn State had to do at the end was take a knee to win but by scoring a TD, Penn State went up by 8 allowing Indiana to tie.

General Notes

Captains – No. 6 Tate Whatley, No. 18 Natrone Brooks, No. 46 Averie Habas, No. 70 Khalique Washington

Liberty won the toss and deferred until the second half and defended the south end zone

Attendance – 1,000 (COVID-19 capacity)

The Golden Eagles fell to 1-1 on the road this season and dropped its first-ever meeting with Liberty.

Tim Billings served as the acting coach for the contest, after interim coach Scotty Walden missed the game after testing positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week.

The 91 total points was the most combined by two teams in a Southern Miss game since a 106-point game when the Golden Eagles won 56-50 at Texas State (9/19/15).

Offensive Notes

The Golden Eagle scored a season-high 21 points in the third quarter.

The 94-yard drive for the Golden Eagles’ final score in the third quarter was the longest of the year for the squad.

Tate Whatley posted his fourth career start at quarterback and scored on the Golden Eagles’ opening drive with a 10-yard rush.

Whatley added three more rushing scores – from 16, 1 and 4 yards – to become the first Golden Eagle to rush for four scores since Jalen Richard did it against Old Dominion (11/21/15). Whatley now has seven career rushing TDs.

Brownlee registered his third-straight 100-yard game with 114 receiving yards on five catches and a touchdown, including an acrobatic catch on the sideline for 29 yards in the first quarter leading the teams receiving corps. The Golden Eagles have had a 100-yard receiver in all five games this season.

Antoine Robinson recorded a season-high 39 yards with his three catches.

Right tackle Arvin Fletcher started in his 41st career game.

Frank Gore, Jr. led the Golden Eagles on the ground with 79 yards on 15 carries. The freshman has paced the team in rushing for the third time this season.

Defensive Notes

Santrell Latham forced his first fumble of the year and first of his career that Hayes Maples covered for the first of his career. The Golden Eagles went on to score off that turnover. Latham also added another sack in the fourth quarter, posting his first two of the year.

Southern Miss has now forced one turnover in every game this season.

The defense registered their season high for number of sacks with four.

Special Teams

The Golden Eagles returned their second pooch kick in as many games and scored after the kick.

Griffin Fleming average 37.2 yards over four punts including two inside Liberty’s 20.

Fleming completed his first pass on a fake punt for 13 yards, but came up short of the first down marker in the fourth quarter.

August 31st is an odd time to fire a head football coach...

Jackson state just fired their head football coach. They are not scheduled to play again until the spring but it is still last-minute taking that into account. One strange rumor I read as far as a potential coach was Deion Sanders.

Covid watch Fridays.....

Guys, I've heard of nothing yet about the team not leaving because of Covid. They usually test around this time. If you here of anything, post on this thread. There are parents that spend a lot of money to go watch their children travel and if we can help them, let's do that. I so know some parents had to take a loss on the tickets because it was so late when the news came out last week.
