Scrimmage Quick Hits 8/20/22

1. Keyes had a really good day at QB. Started out strong and finished strong as well.

2. The running game was clicking today. Goal line offense was strong and physical.

3. Defense was knocked on their heels early but settled in as the scrimmage went on.

4. Offense line run blocked well. They still have some protection issues to fix, but it is a much better group this season.

Déjà vu

It may be easier to tell us who is not injured. We may be onto several games before Brownlee is back. The same with Baker.

I infer from Hall's comments that we are plagued with the same problems as last year. The QB is being rushed on every pass play because the OL can't pass protect. The QB can't complete passes. Tackling is not sharp. These problems should have been fixed by now. Rebuilding the OL was a must, but no account was taken. Finding a QB that could pass was also a must, but efforts to find one were abandoned. Believing non-productive status quo players were sufficient will cost us this year.

This is why my optimistic pre-season predictions have changed. We will be lucky to win 5 games.

Possible Presidential frontrunner

Hearing the name Sean Tindell (Mississippi Director of Public Safety) as the frontrunner from a number of different camps. One of those camps enlightened me on Bennett's Ouster/resignation... Apparently someone on the IHL soured on him after he nixed the Art Briles hire. All rumors of course.... but the Tindell talk comes from someone who would know who the frontrunner is. My other source that told me the same thing is three hours away and doesnt run in the same circles as the first.

8/17 Fall Camp quick hits

After the scrimmage yesterday, today was a light workout with no shoulder pads and shorts.

I got to sit down and interview Austin Armstrong after practice which I'll put out as a full piece, but I'll drop a couple of quick highlights from practice here.

  • Jason Brownlee was off of crutches but still has his knee wrapped and is walking pretty gingerly. They're keeping things pretty quiet on the injury front as a whole this year but the sentiment from the staff is that they expect him back soon.
  • Santrell Latham looks to be just fine. He didn't practice today but looks like he's close to returning.
  • Today was a lot of kickoff work, situational walkthrough drills (2-minute, red zone, etc.), and 7-on-7s. Keyes had a nice day today, as did Trey Lowe.
  • Eric Scott stood out, yet again, in coverage. He's going to have a chance to play ball on Sundays if he stays on track health-wise and produces like he's capable of doing.
