the circumstances and the usual contracts we give coaches that only favor the coaches...Ellis Johnson et al.

Todd had one year left on his current deal...we got about half his salary as a buyout. I am happily surprised we got anything, and 385,000 given the circumstances, is not bad.

I don't know whether he was offered a raise and extension after this season, but he should have been. I mean, was anyone not sure he is a keeper at this point? If nothing else, an extension with a higher buyout would have made him less easy to pick off.

I was told the contract was being worked up but Monken was wanting more money for the assistants but was told there wasn't any or much available. Don't know if true just what I heard.

So instead of getting a raise for his assistants, he put them out of a job ? Is the logic "Give my assistants a raise or I'll leave (knowing that his assistants will be replaced b a new incoming coach. SO now, not only do they not get a raise, they get a boot instead and have to find a job ?????)

Yeah. doesn't make much sense. I'm sure they were in the middle of contract negotiations when the Bucs came calling. Whether or not he asked for assistants raises or whether or not we could afford them was probably irrelevant in his decision making process. Having said that, he probably realizes that he'll always lose assistants here because we are poor and maybe didn't want that battle every other year. The shiny lights and big money of the NFL was probably somewhat a relief. So yeah, I just contradicted myself......

It seems like usually (in other organizations), if the coach were going to agree to an extension, the AD would have had the new contract prepared to present to the coach immediately (the day after) the C-USA championship game....not wait until late January.

My guess is Monken wanted to test the market, and he got just the time frame he wanted.

Pure speculation on my part, but you just don't drag it out if your intent is to keep your coaching staff in place.
