USM and Coke agree to new beverage deal

All I ever heard from the G era was something about pressure washers, a bad Coke deal, car dealerrships, and why Southern Miss merchandise couldn't be marketed outside Hattiesburg. Growing up in MS, if you went to any other town's shopping venues, all you would find was the schools up north merchandise.

Wasn't there some issue after G left and Hammond was running things where he specifically called out the previous coke contract and was going to re-bid it and it really ruffled some feathers with people at coke or tied to it somehow?

Also, the previous contract, and its stated in the article, was with Hattiesburg Coka-Cola. This one is with The Coca-Cola Bottling Company United – Gulf Coast, LLC. Did H'burg coke change names or is this a different coke distributor?

Hammond basically called out the previous administration for the sweetheart deal that Coke had with USM. Hattiesburg Coca-Cola is a division of Coca-Cola United Gulf Coast.

I always thought that if USM athletics was going to grow, it would need corporate sources. Like it or not, Louisville athletics grew in part for its deal with Papa John's Pizza. More sound deals with private business>less dependence on university. Is the athletic dept self funded or dependent on tax payers' dollars?

Houston, I have always said the same thing. We do not get an SEC welfare check for 20 million every year so we need corporate sponsors. We should be trying to get some big name deals, Coke, casinos, Southern Company, etc.
