hizik, two SEC assistants in mix at Southern Miss?
By GridironNow.com Staff on January 26, 2016
Insiders tell GN that among the candidates for the Southern Miss coaching vacancy is North Carolina defensive coordinator Gene Chizik.
Among others being considered are North Carolina co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic, Ole Miss co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Matt Luke and Florida offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier.
Southern Miss is seeking a coach to replace Todd Monken, who left over the weekend to become offensive coordinator of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Kapilovic is a former Southern Miss assistant. Luke is a Mississippi native who attended Ole Miss.
New Arizona State offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey — who had held that role at Southern Miss until leaving for ASU in early December — was said to be a candidate with the Golden Eagles, but media reports Tuesday have him remaining at Arizona State.
Chizik, 54, has been a head coach at Iowa State (2007-08) and Auburn (2009-12); he won a national title with the Tigers in 2010. He was out of football for two years before UNC coach Larry Fedora — himself a former Southern Miss coach — tabbed him to run the Tar Heels’ defense this past season.
