The First weekend in December 2011, many of us Southern Miss fans couldn't wait to play in a Championship Game and to see how good we were against the then ranked #6 Houston Cougars. Look back at that game and see how many Great players played that day, they played inspired football.
They believed in the coach, the system, each other, and that they would have great fan support that day. They did (the band, cheerleaders, and about 2,500 fans in Gold)
We were ranked 24th that day, and we came out ready to play and played with a chip on our shoulder. We played to WIN for 60mins.
We did exactly that, WON BIG, ranking us at the end of the year 18th.
It's not where you start, but where you finish.
Now, fast forward to 2015. We have a head coach that has done everything possible with his staff over 3 seasons now to improve a team that was left for dead after the 2012 season. Slowly getting their system in place as well as finding the right players and role players to build a Championship Team.
Coach Monken did some unusual things in going to get 11 JUCO players and 5 fifth year seniors from some great teams to put together with some already very good players that had been here.
These 16 players with the returning players have bought in to the system and each week have gotten better, and now are starting to believe in each other and that they can play for a Championship.
Many guys came to this school to do exactly that, WIN A Championship.
I think it means more than any of us will ever know for this team and these special players to Win this Saturday and play for a Championship Ring.
Many of these players have stuck it out through some tough years and have always believed in Coach Monken and that his system would help get us to this Saturday.
For that, they are all being rewarded for that hard work and sacrifice to this program and to each other.
This team is a team of destiny as many players have come from so many different areas and schools to make a team that has ONE GOAL, a Championship!
This team will walk into Tech's stadium with a Sea of GOLD waiting for them, the Band, Cheerleaders, ready to played inspired football, and play a team that has been told they will be the Western Conference Champs by the coaches and media all season long.
This Golden Eagle team deserves to be here and like 2011 will play with a chip on their shoulder, and proved to everyone that they are great players with the will to WIN and get this football program back to where a few came into it 5 seasons ago.
