Offensive Player of the Week Nomination
Ito Smith, RB, 5-9, 193, Sr., Mobile, Ala.
Smith tallied 153 rushing yards on 15 carries for 153 yards and three rushing touchdowns. He finished his home career with an 80-yard touchdown run on his final rush to collect his third 80 or more offensive play this season, setting a school mark for most offensive plays of that length or more in the same season. He also has accumulated four 80 offensive plays in his career, including a M.M. Roberts Stadium best 86-yard scoring rush a season ago, to set a career mark at the school. His three rushing scoring scores, the others from 1 and 3 yards, tied a career-high for that category as he accomplished that feat for the third time in his career and now has 12 games in which he scored at least two rushing touchdowns. His three rushing touchdowns gives him 41 for his career, moving him into second place on the school’s career chart and just three behind tying leader Damion Fletcher (2006-09), who notched 44. Smith also collected his sixth 100-yard rushing game this season to give him 22 for his career. He also has 6,182 career all-purpose yards, which trails Fletcher by 71 yards for tops at the school for that category.
Defensive Player of the Week Nomination
Kelsey Douglas, DB, 5-11, 190, RSr., Missouri City, Texas
Douglas intercepted a pair of passes of 52 and 48 yards and both went for touchdowns, tying a school record. Larry Ussery also achieved this accomplishment at Louisiana Tech in 1967. The interceptions were his first two of the season as well as the second and third of his career. He added three solo tackles of which one was for loss in the contest.
Special Teams Player of the Week Nomination
Parker Shaunfield, PK, 6-0, 170, RJr., Aledo, Texas
He collected on all seven extra-point attempts and all three field goals tries (23, 40, 21) to increase his string of made field goals to 15. He is 17-for-19 this season on field goal attempts and his made total ranks tied for fifth on the Golden Eagle single-season chart. He has also converted 37-of-38 extra point attempts this season.
Notes• The Golden Eagles clinched their 17th winning season over the last 22 years and 70th overall in 101 years of football. It is also the team’s third consecutive year of seven or more wins.
• The Golden Eagles’ 66 points against Charlotte were their most in a game since Nov. 1, 2008, in a 70-14 win over UAB.
• The 584 yards of offense were Southern Miss’ most since having 702 against Rice on Oct. 1, 2015. In fact, the Golden Eagles have averaged 54.5 points and 550.5 yards per game over the last two contests.
• The team’s 363 rushing yards were their most against an FBS team since Oct. 1, 2011 versus Rice (370). Southern Miss also had 369 in the 2016 home opener versus Savannah State.
• Korey Robertson extended his reception streak to 24 games, finishing with six catches for 91 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown on the first drive of the second half. He moved into fifth by himself in the school’s single-season record book with his 10th receiving touchdown of the season.
• Tez Parks’ two-yard TD in the fourth quarter was the first of his career. He finished with a career-high 91 yards on 12 carries.
• T’Rod Daniels finished with four carries for 70 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown. His other score on the season was a 49-yard rush versus Southern.
• It gave him three-career interceptions, with the first return going for 52 yards and the second for 48.
• Southern Miss held Charlotte to 96 yards passing, the fourth time in two seasons an opponent was held below 100.
• Southern Miss allowed just nine completions on 25 attempts (36 percent), its best of the season.
